Box Office Predictions: Bow Down To Denzel

Thursday, February 9th, 2012

Could February go two for two? (For wide releases, at least.) After a solid performance from both Chronicle and The Woman in Black it’s up to Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Safe House, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and The Vow to keep it up. Journey 2 is getting the widest release and even though it’s going up against a nice assortment of competition, there’s no reason to think it can’t pull a Percy Jackson and still post a big number. Will it make $31 million? Probably not, but it could match its predecessor’s $21 million opening weekend haul. Thanks to Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds, Safe…

Daniel Espinosa

Interview: Safe House Director Daniel Espinosa

Monday, February 6th, 2012

According to Ryan Reynolds, “Daniel’s a guy you want to buy stock in,” and after seeing Safe House, I’d have to agree. Safe House is director Daniel Espinosa’s fourth feature, but his very first American film. It stars Reynolds as Matt Weston, a young CIA agent assigned to a Cape Town safe house, which basically equates to a glorified babysitting job. He reports to his post, listens to some music, throws a ball against a wall and goes home. Sounds like a relaxing day, but not for a guy who’s itching to become a CIA case agent. No experience? No case agent gig. Matt’s luck changes, for better or worse,…

The theme of this week’s Cheat Sheet? Casting. Well, for the most part. We’ve got the best of the best including J.J. Abrams’ hopes to cast Benicio del Toro as his villain in Star Trek 2 as well as a slew of potential recruits for Warner Bros’ Akira. It’s been confirmed that Jennifer Lopez is producing a Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego movie, but now the question is, will she star in it, too? Then there’s Andy Serkis who just earned a solid paycheck for signing on for Rise of the Planet of the Apes 2 as well as subsequent Apes films. Yes, this Cheat Sheet is certainly…

Movie News Cheat Sheet: Flight Gets John Goodman, DreamWorks Gets The BFG And Frank Or Francis Gets Kevin Kline x 2

Sunday, October 2nd, 2011

Welcome to October! Even though we’re creeping closer to Halloween, the Movie News Cheat Sheet almost entirely steers clear of spooky territory. Beyond a new trailer for Paranormal Activity 3 and claims that John Travolta is a vampire, the material here is rather tame. We’ve got some exciting casting news to share including Frank or Francis‘ double dose of Kevin Kline as well as Flight‘s growing roster that now boasts names like John Goodman and Melissa Leo in addition to Denzel Washington and potentially Don Cheadle. Warner Bros. is looking to hire as well, but the studio is scouring the market for a director rather than an actor. Christopher Nolan,…

Robert Zemeckis in talks to direct Flight, Denzel Washington possibly starring

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Robert Zemeckis is coming back to live-action; he is currently in talks to direct “Flight”, a drama written by scriptwriter John Gatins, which will tell the story of a alcoholic and drug-addled pilot who rescues his plane and his passengers when his plane malfunctions. When the FAA discovers the pilot’s past, they attempt to sidesweep it in order to preserve the pilot’s image, who is trying to change his life. Currently, Denzel Washington is loosely attached to the project. When the script was property of Dreamworks, Gatins was set to direct, but once the company split with Paramount, the script became Paramount property. Zemeckis…

Uptown Saturday Night being remade

Friday, March 25th, 2011

According to CinemaBlend, “Uptown Saturday Night” is being remade at the behest and will of Will Smith. Smith originally got the rights to the 1974 film starring Sidney Poitier and Bill Cosby in 2002, and the script was being written by “Cop Out” writers Mark and Robb Cullen. At one point, Denzel Washington was rumored to be attached to the project. But that was a year ago. Since then, the Cullens have since been replaced by Tim Dowling. The rumor’s still out that Smith (who will also be producing the film through his company Overbrook Entertainment) and Washington will star in the remake, but again, it’s still a rumor. A…
