African Cats

DVD Review: African Cats, Monte Carlo, Wrong Turn 4 and Thankskilling

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

In a business that frequently has the tendency to disproportionately celebrate the contributions only of above-the-line talent, a big part of the allure of something like “African Cats” lies in its below-the-line artisans. An engaging, gorgeously photographed nature documentary that puts audiences on Kenyan plains in stunning fashion amidst its title subjects, this Disneynature title only stumbles in its willful insistence on imposing a family-friendly narrative on footage that is more than capable on its own, with less artificial constraints. What does that mean, straight to the point? Less, or none, of Samuel L. Jackson’s narration, dripping as it is with exaggerated tones that needlessly attempt to dictate mood. Granted, he’s given…

Lady And The Tramp

Disney To Re-Release Lady And The Tramp On Blu-ray

Sunday, November 13th, 2011

“Lady and the Tramp” is a favorite of many Disney fans, and for those Disney fans who love Blu-ray, you’ll finally be able to see it in your preferred viewing format. According to CinemaBlend, “Lady and the Tramp” will be released February 7, 2012, making it the first Diamond Edition for the year. Also, according to the site, the film was originally restored for a DVD release in 2006 and has been in the vault since 2007. This is really exciting, since Diamond Editions are–at least at this point in DVD/Blu-ray technology–the ultimate in Disney DVDs and Blu-rays. According to CinemaBlend, some of the special features to be on the…

Cast And Director Of Pirates 4 Talk Filming and More

Thursday, October 13th, 2011

The cast and director of “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” sat down with the folks at Disney for a Q&A session about their film. Here are a few snippets from their interviews. Astrid Berges-Frisbey (Syrena) DISNEY: Did you do any research for your role? BERGES-FRISBEY: I tried to research mermaids throughout history in literature and film, but these mermaids are very different. They move more like fish and they are very animalistic. D:What was it like to work alongside actors like Penelope Cruz and Johnny Depp? B-F: It was fantastic. I learned so much from watching them work. They put a lot of effort into their work, but…

The First Teaser Trailer For The Avengers Released

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Well, it has been almost 4 years, and 5 movies in the making and the first teaser trailer of the much anticipated (and hyped) “The Avengers” has hit the Internet. And surprisingly, it’s not a bootleg, it’s the real thing. Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures have been cooking up this ad campaign since 2008 when the first “Iron Man” movie was a box office success. Since 2008, Marvel Studio has released a movie for every member of the Avengers to serve as an origin story until 2012 when they would all meet up for this movie. Joss Whedon was chosen to direct this film, probably because of his past work…

The Nightmare Before Christmas

DVD Review: The Nightmare Before Christmas, Deadtime Stories: Volume 2, The 10th Victim

Monday, October 10th, 2011

In an admission that will come as a considerable disappointment to a former coworker (who, for the record, is decidedly not Goth), my initial memories of “The Nightmare Before Christmas” were somewhat fuzzy. My first viewing of producer Tim Burton and director Henry Selick’s stop-motion animated film, not too long after its original home video release, was marred with, umm, distractions. So I hadn’t the concrete impressions one might have with a more focused viewing — just an impression of the hand-crafted feel, and a lingering sense of disappointment in relation to the movie’s songs, from Danny Elfman. A re-visiting of the somewhat seminal work — which scored a visual effects…
