The ensemble cast of 2011′s hit drama ‘The Help’ were among the surprising winners at the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. The ceremony, which was held Sunday, January 29, 2012 at the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center and aired live on TNT and TBS at 8pm ET/5pm PT, presented the Actor statuette for the outstanding film and prime-time television performances of 2011. Movie News Cheat Sheet: Ferris Bueller At The Super Bowl, The Avengers On Twitter And Hugo All Over The Academy Awards

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

Drama, drama, drama. And no, I’m not referring to the genre. We’ve got folks at odds all throughout the industry. India’s Central Board of Film Certification isn’t happy with the level of nudity in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but David Fincher isn’t willing to make the required cuts, so it looks like Dragon Tattoo will be a no go for India. Similarly, Hungary gave a rather naughty Shame poster the thumbs down. On the other hand, we’ve also got quite a bit of film appreciation floating around out there, namely the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards. Hugo topped the pack with 11 honors while The Artist followed…

Movie News Cheat Sheet: Lego Gets Lord Of The Rings, The Help Gets Golden Globe Nods And The Box Office Gets More Money

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Well, for some of us. With the end of the year fast approaching, the awards nods are rolling in and this past week a big list was revealed – the Golden Globe nominations. Generally the right films snagged the honors – The Artist, The Descendants, The Help – but we did have a few upsets, namely the lack of Steven Spielberg’s name on the Best Director list for his work on War Horse. Brendan Meyer will certainly be having a very merry Christmas. The young actor was just cast as Stilson in Ender’s Game while Spike Lee turned to Clive Owen for…

2011 Golden Globe Nominations: Love And Snubs

Friday, December 16th, 2011

Hollywood’s award season is always a time filled with stress, especially for those who tend to follow every other list of nominations that pops up between now and late January. It’s not just stress from those distributors and studio folk who hope that their possible Oscar contender will make the cut, but from press and dedicated movie-watchers like us who bitch and moan the minute a favorite film of theirs doesn’t get awards love. Well, you can’t please them all, which seems to be more and more apparent as recent years have gone by. Perhaps it’s because I find myself even more engrossed in the fall awards season craze, but…

The film comes after Sony, Glooney and Hesloy optioned David Bianculli’s book ‘Dangerously Funny: The Uncensored Story Of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.’ The brother’s show ran from 1967-69 on CBS, and it made headlines for…

The Descendants Movie Review

Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011

Title: The Descendants Directed By: Alexander Payne Written By: Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon, Jim Rash, based on Kaui Hart Hemmings’s novel Cast: George Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller, Nick Krause, Patricia Hastie, Beau Bridges, Matthew Lillard, Judy Greeg If our currently somber economic conditions have been caused in part by the selling of housing to people who cannot afford it, such is not the case in Alexander Payne’s “The Descendants.” Payne, whose “Sideways” had us remember Paul Giamatti’s quote “Don’t give me merlot,” this time constructs a man who is expected to sell land for housing to large developers with deep pockets and with little chance of default. Given the…
