Seeing Double: This Year's Dual Oscar Contenders

Posted by abe On November - 2 - 2011 0 Comment

As we enter November, the Oscars can’t be too far off. This famous awards ceremony honors movies released during the calendar year, meaning that some actors have multiple films eligible. Jude Law released a mammoth six films back in 2004, three of which earned Oscar attention, though not for his performances. Academy rules don’t permit an actor to receive two nominations in the same category, but earning one lead and one supporting mention is permissible. Often, a big year for an actor with one knockout movie role might lead to two nominations, even if the second is undeserved. For instance, was Jamie Foxx really Oscar-worthy in Collateral or was he  [ Read More ]

Title: The Descendants Director: Alexander Payne Cast: George Clooney, Judy Greer, Shailene Woodley, Matthew Lillard, Beau Bridges, Robert Forster and Amara Miller Life gets easily interrupted with, well, life. It’s so easy to fall into routines, trying to make up for lost time and getting comfortable with your situation. Sooner or later, those routines get in the way and you forget what’s the most important thing to you, your family. Dealing with work, or school leaves you with blinders to the rest of the world but then the rest of the world, sneaks up behind you to give you a real dose of life. It’s important when these bouts of  [ Read More ]

Julius Caesar was told to bewar the Ides of March, but the critics would like you to know that you don’t have to avoid the film “The Ides of March” starring George Clooney and the probably-retiring Ryan Gosling. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an 82% fresh rating, and the audience has given it a similar rating, 81%. The general consensus, according to Rotten Tomatoes, the film is “not exactly exposing revelatory truths, [but] ‘The Ides of March’ is [a] supremely well-acted drama that moves at a calm, confident clip.” Individually, most of the critics loved the film, calling it “intelligent filmmaking” (Charlie McCollum, San Jose Mercury News), “a simple  [ Read More ]

The Ides of March Movie Review 2

Title: The Ides of March Directed by: George Clooney Starring: Ryan Gosling, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood Political films often strive to showcase the views of the director and screenwriter, and often times only appeal to the people who agree with their opinions. While George Clooney, who not only starred in the new political drama ‘The Ides of March,’ but also directed, co-wrote and produced it as well, infused his liberal beliefs into the movie, he also created unique characters that audiences can relate to. The filmmaker interestingly didn’t just present his views in the film, which is based on the play  [ Read More ]

Fingers crossed October begins better than September ended. We’ve got just two new wide releases arriving this weekend and while one is poised to make a splash at about 3,300 theaters, the other could run into trouble with only 2,000 locations and a limited viewership. Director Shawn Levy is used to making the big bucks with his films, but unlike the Night at the Museum movies, Real Steel isn’t getting a summer or Christmas release. Then again, it does have the benefit of going up against just one new film and a handful of box office vets all on their way out. Those assets could help it earn just as  [ Read More ]

A few months ago, comic book fans and moviegoers were excited when Darren Aronofsky was named director of “Wolverine 2″. Would this be Aronofsky’s “The Dark Knight”? Would this be Aronofsky’s crossover to a mainstream audience? Well, no. Aronofsky dropped out of the project citing family issues that would get in the way of the production. Personally, I think Aronofsky was put off by not having final cut on the project. Vulture is reporting the director of last year’s surprise hit, “Black Swan”, will helm a fifteen-year-old screenplay called “Human Nature” written by screenwriter Jeff Welsh. It is also reported that George Clooney is soon to be attached to this  [ Read More ]

And it “was”, sure. But a film adaptation of this property — based on the original 1930s radio program, which has lived on in movie serials and comic books — was in the works for more than a decade, with a long list of actors inclusive of George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Jet Li and Stephen Chow all at one point attached, in various combinations. In fact, a visionary music video director named Michel Gondry was hired in  [ Read More ]
