Disney has optioned rights to adapt the young adult novel “Fallen” by Lauren Kate. Mayhem Productions’ Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray will be producing the project. The book, which was released this week from Delacorte Books for Young Readers, is about a lonely and alienated girl who finds herself the object of affection and attention from two young men, both of whom are actually angels battling over her. The novel is part of a four-book series, all of which are included in the adaptation deal. No casting or directing news has been announced yet. Variety.com is reporting John Malkovich is joining the cast of “Secretariat,” the Randall Wallace-directed drama for Disney and Mayhem Pictures about the famous racehorse. Mark Ciardi and Gordon Gray of Mayhem are producing. Malkovich will play the former jockey turned trainer Lucien Laurin, who became the trainer of the 1973 Triple Crown-winning racehorse The film will be focusing on, alongside the story of the horse’s rise to fame, the relationship between the horse and his owner Penny Chenery (Diane Lane), a housewife who takes over her ailing father’s horse farm though she knows next to nothing about horses.
