Movie News Cheat Sheet: Ferris Bueller At The Super Bowl, The Avengers On Twitter And Hugo All Over The Academy Awards

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

Drama, drama, drama. And no, I’m not referring to the genre. We’ve got folks at odds all throughout the industry. India’s Central Board of Film Certification isn’t happy with the level of nudity in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but David Fincher isn’t willing to make the required cuts, so it looks like Dragon Tattoo will be a no go for India. Similarly, Hungary gave a rather naughty Shame poster the thumbs down. On the other hand, we’ve also got quite a bit of film appreciation floating around out there, namely the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards. Hugo topped the pack with 11 honors while The Artist followed…

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark Movie Review

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Title: Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark Director: Troy Nixey Starring: Bailee Madison, Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Jack Thompson, Julia Blake Haunted house films are back in full force. In April we got the beautifully modest and wildly enjoyable Insidious from James Wan and now Guillermo del Toro and Co. are giving the subgenre a go with Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark. While the two are rooted in entirely different core concepts, they do have quite a bit in common, namely child stars vs. evil entities, eerily warm yet threatening tones, fantastic visuals and the fact that they’re both incredibly frightening, exhilarating and entertaining all in one. Haunted house…

Bailee Madison in Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

Interview: Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark's Bailee Madison

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

At just 9-years-old, actress Bailee Madison went head-to-head with what many kids consider their worst nightmare, things that go bump in the night. Clearly Madison had no trouble separating fact from fiction because now, at 11-years-old, she’s hitting the press circuit for Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark and well, she might be one of the most poised and professional actresses out there, regardless of her age. Madison leads as Sally. When her mother decides she’s had enough, Sally is sent to Rhode Island to live with her father, Alex (Guy Pearce). Struggling to revive his architecture career, Alex’s latest project is the old Blackwood Manor, the renovation of which…

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark Movie Review

Monday, August 22nd, 2011

Title: Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark Studio: Film District/ Miramax Films Directed By: Troy Nixey Written By: Guillermo del Toro, Matthew Robbins, from the teleplay by Nigel McKeand Cast: Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison, Jack Thompson, Garry McDonald, Edwina Ritchard, Julia Blake, Nicholas Bell Screened at: Broadway, NYC, 7/28/11 Opens: August 26, 2011 If you go by the production notes, this is one of those times in which the studio had mixed feelings about being denied the PG-13 rating that it requested. Instead the MPAA slapped an R rating, which could lower box office since kids under 17 would have to accompanied by adults. Though there’s no sex…

Monday, July 25th, 2011

I can’t believe it, but this is officially it; my coverage of San Diego Comic Con 2011 has come to a close. For five incredibly long days, the experience went by in a flash. The action was non-stop from the moment I touched down in San Diego and while it was extremely exhausting and probably one of the most trying working experiences I’ve ever gone through, it was beyond worth it. So, what’d you think? Did you like my coverage choices? Were the formats I chose to report in effective? Do let me know because I’m thrilled to say, it looks as though I’ll be returning to Comic Con next…

SDCC 2011: Thursday Wrap Up And Photos

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

And that’s a wrap on my first full busy day at San Diego Comic Con. I kicked things off at the press conference for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1, which featured Elizabeth Reaser, Ashley Greene, Nikki Reed, Julia Jones and Booboo Stewart after which Bill Condon, Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner took the stage. Before wrapping up things with Summit Entertainment, I spoke with the writer of one of the studio’s next book-to-film adaptations, Warm Bodies author Isaac Marion. Keep an eye out for that interview later this week. From there it was off to the convention center where I spent some time checking out the…
