When it was first greenlit, I seriously doubt that anyone would have taken bets on The King’s Speech grossing the amount of money it did. It was an Oscar-bait movie through and through, designed to charm arthouse audiences and win little gold trophies. But having producer Harvey Weinstein on one’s side is a good thing if you’re a small independent film that requires a special marketing push, or associated with such. Six months, $393 million in worldwide theatrical receipts and a stunning four top-shelf Oscar victories later, no one is laughing at this little British drama. I won’t pretend to necessarily agree with its Best Picture Academy Award win, and…

Title: The King’s Speech Directed By: Tom Hooper Starring: Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Gambon, Guy Pearce, Timothy Spall When considering the basics of The King’s Speech, there’s really nothing particularly alluring about it. It’s a period piece about a Duke with a stutter. Yes, that’s basically true, but there’s more to this film than can ever be conveyed in even the most detailed synopsis. The combination of spectacular performances and masterful direction turns this story into an all-consuming emotional experience. Based on a true story, Colin Firth stars as Albert, the Duke of York. As the son of King George the V (Michael Gambon), Bertie (the…

Title: Animal Kingdom Directed By: David Michod Starring: Ben Mendelsohn, Joel Edgerton, Guy Pearce, Luke Ford, Jacki Weaver, Sullivan Stapleton, James Frencheville Since when did a barrage of bullets make a crime drama a winner? Hollywood might saturate our theaters with implausible film after film where heroes narrowly escape machinegun fire or every character unites for a grand finale shootout, but apparently that hasn’t consumed the Australian film industry. In writer-director David Michod’sĀ Animal Kingdom we get the genre antithesis, a film lacking action that builds its tension through smart writing, excellent performances and calculated pacing. Pope (Ben Mendelsohn) is an armed robber in hiding, his brother Craig (Sullivan Stapleton) is…

In a summer overrun with blockbusters, here’s a limited release film you might not have heard of, Animal Kingdom. The film is the story of a young man named J (James Frencheville) who goes to live with his older cousins after his mother passes away. But this is no family drama; J’s cousins are members of the Cody clan, a notorious family of the Melbourne crime scene. Unfortunately for J, he moves in right as that dynasty begins to crumble. This domestic poster isn’t bad but it’s certainly not as stimulating as the Australian one. That one (viewable here), shows the entire gang, J, his cousins, their mother Smurf (Jacki…
