DVD Review: Bridesmaids, The Tempest, The Conspirator, Dressed to Kill and The Sentiment of The Flesh

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Too many romantic comedies witlessly hone in on the differences between men and women to create a heightened-stakes backdrop in which every interaction with the opposite sex is imbued with some sort of grand, gender-statement significance, which is of course then supposed to be neatly resolved and tidily put away by the time a paired-off happy ending rolls around. Co-written by Annie Mumolo and “Saturday Night Live”‘s Kristen Wiig, “Bridesmaids” instead focuses a considerable amount of its energy on female friendships, yes, but also the things women want in relationships — love, security, availability — that are the same as men. The result is the best female-fronted Hollywood comedy in years, and a…

The Debt

The Debt Movie Review

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Title: The Debt Director: John Madden Starring: Helen Mirren, Sam Worthington, Jessica Chastain, Marton Csokas, Tom Wilkinson, Jesper Christensen, Ciaran Hinds, Romi Aboulafia The Debt is one of those movies where one simply needs to read the synopsis when deciding whether or not to give this a look. It’s a balanced spy-thriller where there is just as much rhetoric as there is old-school action sequences – due to the fact that this 114 minute flick takes place in Germany in 1965. Knowing that, the script is penned by the fantastical Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class), who has found a way to blend substantial moments with over-the-top fun in his…

Brighton Rock Movie Review

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Title: Brighton Rock Director: Rowan Joffe Starring: Sam Riley, Andrea Riseborough, Helen Mirren, John Hurt, Andy Serkis, Nonso Anozie, Sean Harris A solid cast fall victim to bad storytelling through the lens in Brighton Rock. The 111 minute crime-drama, set in 1964 around a tourist pier England (think Atlantic City), somehow received a scatter-brain edit. Which is kind of inexcusable since this is a remake of the 1947 original based off a class novel from the late 30s, in which both garnered respectable praise. Crime dramas tend to focus on an up-n-comer in the criminal underworld and the story will chronicle the subject’s rise to power. Along the way, there…

New Arthur trailer released

Saturday, March 5th, 2011

A new trailer for the remake of “Arthur” has been released. The trailer, featuring Russell Brand, Greta Gerwig, Helen Mirren and Jennifer Garner also has appearances from the likes of John Hodgman, Evander Holyfield, Nick Nolte and Luis Guzmán. The film is a remake of the 1981 film starring Dudley Moore, Liza Minelli, John Gielgund and Geraldine Fitzgerald, in which a rich drunken playboy must marry a woman he’s not in love with in order to keep his wealthy inheritance. From the trailer alone, I can already tell that “Arthur” purists are going to be upset by the updated script because there are a lot of things in the trailer…

Red Movie Review

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Title: Red Directed By: Robert Schwentke Starring: Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, Karl Urban, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss, Helen Mirren Is it possible for a film starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren to be bad? Maybe, but if you put handguns, machine guns and grenade launchers in theirs hands and give them some snappy dialogue to work with, you’re basically home free. What happens when a highly skilled CIA agent retires? He’s labeled RED, short for Retired and Extremely Dangerous and there’s really no better way to describe retiree Frank Moses (Willis). He’s doing okay in a cozy suburban town, decorating his house…

Legend Of The Guardians Poster

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole Movie Review

Monday, September 20th, 2010

Title: Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole Directed By: Zack Snyder Starring: Jim Sturgess, Emily Barclay, Abbie Cornish, Adrienne DeFaria, Joel Edgerton, Ryan Kwanten, Anthony LaPaglia, Miriam Margolyes, Helen Mirren, Sam Neill, Geoffrey Rush, David Wenham, Hugo Weaving Zack Snyder is clearly a master of visuals, but look at 300 and Watchmen. The minimal plot of 300 was completely overshadowed by the masterful imagery and while those unfamiliar with the source material couldn’t quite understand Watchmen, there was no denying that the film was downright mesmerizing. Sadly, it looks as though Snyder has fallen into a similar trap with Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. The…
