With zero wide release competition in its way, it was obvious Resident Evil: Afterlife would take the top spot at the box office. But not only did Afterlife easily secure the #1 position, it also brought the Resident Evil franchise its biggest opening ever. The opening weekend haul has improved from film to film, the first taking in $17.7 million, Apocalypse earning $23 million, Extinction with $23.7 million and now Afterlife with $27.7 million. Milla Jovovich is likely a very happy lady because not only is this a franchise high, but a personal opening weekend best, too. Afterlife easily surpassed its $60 million budget earning $73.2 million worldwide. Screen Gems  [ Read More ]

Labor Day Weekend Box Office Honors Go To The American

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On September - 6 - 2010 0 Comment

The American may have snagged the #1 spot at the box office, but it’s not really a top honor this Labor Day weekend. It looks as though folks didn’t use their extra day off to head to the theater because The American only managed to bank $13.1 million. Tack on the film’s $3.1 million three-day head start and its $3.3 million holiday intake and that brings it to a total of $19.5 million, just short of its $20 million budget. Taking the #2 spot is newcomer Machete with a $14 million four-day opening weekend. Following close behind is last week’s top earner, Takers, which added another $13.5 million to its  [ Read More ]

The Last Exorcism Barely Edges Out Takers At The Box Office

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On August - 29 - 2010 0 Comment

Julia Roberts, Scott Pilgrim and a horde of man-eating piranha may have been no match for Sly and the gang, but the devil is a different story. Not only did The Last Exorcism snag the top spot from the The Expendables but this week’s other newcomer Takers, too, but not by much. Eli Roth and Lionsgate are likely very pleased with The Last Exorcism’s $21.3 million opening especially considering the film only took $1.8 million to make. And the same goes for the folks over at Screen Gems. After being bumped from its original May release date, who would have thought Takers would help end the summer with a bang  [ Read More ]

The Expendables Overpowers The Box Office Again

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On August - 22 - 2010 1 Comment

Well, there’s no denying it; I was way off this week. Just two of the five new wide release films cracked the top 10 and neither of which are the ones I’d have picked to do so. Still, no new entry stood a chance against The Expendables, which secured the #1 spot for the second week in a row with $16.5 million. Tack that on to its $34.8 million opening and that gives Sly and the gang a total of $64.9 million in its first two weeks. Spot two went to this week’s worst reviewed film, Vampires Suck. The crazy thing is the $12.2 million that earned it its second  [ Read More ]

Sly And The Gang Take The Top Spot At The Box Office

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On August - 15 - 2010 0 Comment

Apparently this week it’s brawn over brains because not only did The Expendables demolish Julia Roberts’ soul-seeking drama Eat Pray Love, but the best reviewed newcomer, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, as well. In fact, that one didn’t even crack the top three. Sylvester Stallone’s muscled up adventure opened with an impressive $35 million while Eat Pray Love had a decent first showing with $23.7 million. The Other Guys took a 49.4% hit in week two taking in $18 million, earning it the third position. Holding on strong in week five is Inception. It added another $10.5 million to its pot, which now sits at $248.6 million. The sad story  [ Read More ]

The Other Guys Dethrones Inception At The Box Office

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On August - 8 - 2010 0 Comment

It looks like The Other Guys was enough of a kick to snag the top spot at the box office from Inception. The Other Guys began its run with a nice $35.6 million marking both Adam McKay and Will Ferrell’s second highest opening. Back in 2006 Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby debuted with an impressive $47 million. For Walberg, The Other Guys comes in at number three behind The Perfect Storm and Planet of the Apes, which opened with $41.3 million and $68.5 million respectively. Inception continues its impressively slow decline just falling 32% in week four. It took in $18.6 million bringing its grand total to $227.7  [ Read More ]

At least one film met my expectations this week. I predicted both Inception and Salt would maintain their positions on the chart forcing Dinner for Schmucks to settle for #3, but it looks like just one of the two was able to hold on. Taking the top spot for the third week in a row is Inception with $27.5 million, bringing its grand total to $193.3 million. Dinner for Schmucks came in at #2 with a gross of $23.5 million, which just missed out on being Steve Carell’s highest debut of the year (not including Despicable Me), falling short of Date Night’s $25.2 million opening. Salt took a 45.9% hit,  [ Read More ]

It looks like Salt didn’t provide enough of a kick to get the majority of moviegoers out of Christopher Nolan’s limbo. Inception dropped just 30.7% taking in $43.5 million easily stealing the weekend from Angelina Jolie who only earned $36.5 million. Inception now has a domestic grand total of $143.7 million and shows no signs of slowing down. Plus, it’s proving to be just as much of a success overseas. Despicable Me is holding on strong adding another $24.1 million to its pot. That boosts its total to $161.7 million and further justifies Universal’s decision to get working on the sequel. The Sorcerer’s Apprentice took the #4 position, but only  [ Read More ]

The weekend estimates are in and it looks like Christopher Nolan had no trouble conducting a little inception of his own, convincing the masses to check out his latest masterpiece. Inception pulled in $60.4 million easily securing the top spot, but that haul doesn’t even come close to Nolan’s last release, The Dark Knight, which earned an incredible $1558.4 million in its first weekend alone. However, Inception does bring Leonardo DiCaprio his biggest opening ever, blowing away Shutter Island’s $41.1 million first weekend total. Despicable Me took a 42% hit dropping Gru and his minions to second place with $32.7 million, which brings its total to $118.4 million. Third place  [ Read More ]

Just because Inception clocks in at 148 minutes doesn’t mean you’ll want to leave Christopher Nolan’s dream world when the film ends. No, there’s no sequel talk – yet – but we do have some action on the flipside, a prequel. It comes from Inception co-producer Jordan Goldberg in the form of a comic called “The Cobol Job.” The action in the comic is what takes place right before the movie begins. Cobb, his second in command, Arthur, and architect, Nash, are hired by a company called Cobol Engineering to steal some information from Proclus Global’s chief engineer regarding an expansion plan. Cobol is trying to secure a job that  [ Read More ]

Inception Movie Review

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On July - 14 - 2010 0 Comment

Title: Inception Directed By: Christopher Nolan Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Tom Hardy, Ken Watanabe, Dileep Rao, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard Why do we dream? Does anyone really know for sure? Probably not, but writer-director Christopher Nolan takes a stab at breaking down the structure of a dream and the influence of the subconscious in Inception. There’s nothing more perplexing than the unknown and Nolan uses that to his advantage. It’s one thing to simply make up a story about a theoretical concept, but it’s another to come up with a scenario and actually make it feel real and that’s exactly what he achieves in Inception. It may  [ Read More ]
