Rio Movie Review

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

Title: Rio Directed By: Carlos Saldanha Starring The Voices Of: Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Leslie Mann, Jemaine Clement, Jamie Foxx, will.I.am, Rodrigo Santoro, George Lopez, Tracy Morgan Is it a bad thing when the animation tells a better story than the characters’ dialogue? Can voice-over work really hamper a CGI cartoon? The answer to these interrogatories is both yes and no. “Rio” is 96 minutes of splendid visuals and vibrant characters. The flick is flying high until some of them start to open their mouths. More specifically, beaks. Now one should know that yours truly screened this the morning after a healthy night of birthday celebrating. So although the professionalism…

Oscars 2011: Forget Who Should Win, This Is Who I Want To Win

Friday, February 25th, 2011

With just a day left to go until the big show, I’d like to bet you’ve had enough Oscar predictions – especially considering quite a handful of the biggest honors are considered locks. Well, I offer you something a little different; not who I think will win, but who I think should win. Best Picture: The King’s Speech Every Best Picture nominee achieves some degree of filmmaking prowess, otherwise, they wouldn’t be nominated in the first place. Rather than pick apart the elements and compare the contenders by the writing, directing acting, etc., this category comes down to something far simpler, yet something tougher to achieve – poignancy. Which of…

Rio Super Bowl promo to make history

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

The promo for the Twentieth Century Fox 3D-animated film “Rio” is set to make Super Bowl history. The commercial for the film will be the first ever to have an embedded code. The ad, which will air during the fourth quarter, will allow viewers to find the frame with the code. This will allow them to be directed to a special “Rio” level of the hugely popular mobile game app “Angry Birds”. The level will then allow the player to enter in a “Rio” sweepstakes, in which they could win a trip to the world premiere of the film in Rio de Janeiro on March 22. Also on that same…

Here's the First Two Minutes from Rio

Saturday, January 29th, 2011

20th Century Fox just released the first two minutes from the upcoming animated film “Rio” by director Carlos Saldanha (Ice Age), and starring Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Neil Patrick Harris and George Lopez. Synopsis: ‘Rio’ is a 3-D animation feature from the makers of the ‘Ice Age’ films. Set in the magnificent city of Rio de Janeiro and the lush rainforest of Brazil, the comedy-adventure centers on Blu, a rare macaw who thinks he is the last of his kind. When Blu discovers there’s another — and that she’s a she — he leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio. But it’s far…

The Social Network's Second Teaser Trailer Makes Its Point Via Status Updates

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

The Social Network marketing campaign is growing on me. The headshot with text poster was a curious start, but with the release of the unusually constructed yet alluring teaser trailer, it became easier to appreciate Columbia Pictures’ approach. Now they’ve sent another teaser trailer our way and while it’s far more telling and visually stimulating than the first, it’s still rather cryptic. The video is basically a cast-wide chat via Facebook status updates. Most of the material comes from Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg, the man who started it all. Andrew Garfield chimes in as Eduardo Saverin, a pal of Zuckerberg’s who helped in the earlier stages of the site’s…

The Social Network Teaser Trailer Demonstrates The Power Of Keeping Things Simple

Friday, June 25th, 2010

Now this is a teaser trailer. When’s the last time you’ve watched a teaser trailer that actually did function as a teaser and didn’t divulge the entire plot? It’s certainly been quite a while for me because this brand new teaser trailer for The Social Network seems like the most innovative thing I’ve ever seen. This video frustratingly keeps The Social Network just out of arm’s reach. It includes zero footage and merely consists of a series of text backed by quotes from the film. Combine that with a booming regal horn accompaniment and you’ve got something that’s tantalizing to the max. Even better? The teaser actually makes me appreciate…

New Poster For The Social Network Is One Gigantic Profile Picture

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

The first poster for The Social Network has arrived and it’s – strange. I’m a huge Jesse Eisenberg fan and just about everything he’s delivered over the past few years has gotten my instant approval, but this poster portrait just doesn’t work at all. That gigantic tagline is weak to begin with, but for the people who aren’t aware that Eisenberg is starring in a film as Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook, how are they supposed to know what this advertisement is for? The film’s title is reduced to a tiny font and stuffed on the right side of the poster in what is supposed to resemble the Facebook…

Holy Rollers Poster Smuggled Onto The Web, Legally Of Course

Friday, April 9th, 2010

The tagline says it all, “In 1998, 1 million ecstasy pills were smuggled into the USA by a group of Hasidic Jews.” If that doesn’t seal the deal and make you eager to see Holy Rollers, there’s something else that might, Jesse Eisenberg. Ever since Zombieland the guy’s been on the up and up and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Not only is there buzz about a Zombieland sequel, but Eisenberg is also coming out in the highly anticipated movie The Social Network, in which he stars as Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook. Luckily the folks behind Holy Rollers snatched him up way before the frenzy….
