Carnage Movie Review

Saturday, November 26th, 2011

Title: Carnage Director: Roman Polanski Starring: Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly Adapting an acclaimed, Tony Award-winning play that perfectly captures the satirizing of the human condition, parenting and marriage into an intriguing, true-to-life film is never an easy task. But director Roman Polanski effortlessly did just that with his new comedy-drama movie ‘Carnage,’ based on Yasmina Reza’s play ‘God of Carnage.’ The filmmaker, who co-wrote the film with the playwright, hired a respectable cast that brilliantly showcased how disengaged people really are from their relationships, and the disdain they hold towards the people who don’t share the same views as they do. ‘Carnage’ follows two…

NYFF 2011 Movie Review: Carnage

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Title: Carnage Director: Roman Polanski The newest film from controversial filmmaker Roman Polanski is set to open this year’s New York Film Festival. And rightfully so, the New York Film Festival usually looks for high profile films to kick off the two week festival of Hollywood fare and Art House cinema. Last year, David Fincher’s “The Social Network” opened the festival to the delight of moviegoers and critics alike, also kicking off the fall Awards Season. This year, it’s Polanski’s turn. With “Carnage,” we see something we usually don’t see from this filmmaker, a comedy but moreover, a comedy of manners (of sorts). “Carnage” starts harmlessly enough, cast and crew…

DVD Review: The Beaver, Super Hybrid, The Death of Andy Kaufman, Blitz and Prom

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

For all her success as an actress, Jodie Foster has had one of the more strangely cursed modern-day careers as a director. She’s made some good movies (“Little Man Tate” remains underrated), but she’s also had countless projects fall apart, including a wonderfully scripted period piece circus tale which Russell Crowe was attached to for quite some time, before a shoulder injury finally scuttled production for good at the last moment. “The Beaver” represents Foster’s latest Waterloo, through no particular fault of her own. A unique and well regarded debut script from writer Kyle Killen made the rounds in Hollywood, and for a while had Steve Carell attached to star. When…

The Beaver Movie Review

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

Title: The Beaver Director: Jodie Foster Starring: Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence, Cherry Jones, Riley Thomas Stewart, Zachary Booth Off-screen, Mel Gibson may or may not be a deplorable human being — and I tend to think on a certain level he kind of is, with the caveat that I additionally understand he’s also very much a guy in deep, deep pain — but the fact remains that he and his new movie, “The Beaver”, are uniquely suited for one another. When Gibson, after a string of disastrous incidents in his personal life, mounted a comeback with last year’s “Edge of Darkness”, his first starring role in…
