Movie News Cheat Sheet: Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain And Joel Edgerton Take Two

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

Happy Super Bowl Sunday! Did the Giants win yet? While you’re all downing all of the beer, pigs in a blanket and football you can, I’m here to make sure you’ve got your weekly dose of movies news here waiting for you when you’re ready. Let’s face it, there’s just so long the Super Bowl will sustain a conversation at school or work this week. Well, unless the Giants really do win and you’re from New York like myself. Anyway, on the table this week is the return of James Wan’s Insidious as well as some casting updates for the remake of Evil Dead. Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain and Joel…

Movie News Cheat Sheet: Ferris Bueller At The Super Bowl, The Avengers On Twitter And Hugo All Over The Academy Awards

Sunday, January 29th, 2012

Drama, drama, drama. And no, I’m not referring to the genre. We’ve got folks at odds all throughout the industry. India’s Central Board of Film Certification isn’t happy with the level of nudity in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but David Fincher isn’t willing to make the required cuts, so it looks like Dragon Tattoo will be a no go for India. Similarly, Hungary gave a rather naughty Shame poster the thumbs down. On the other hand, we’ve also got quite a bit of film appreciation floating around out there, namely the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards. Hugo topped the pack with 11 honors while The Artist followed…

The Thing Movie Review

Saturday, October 15th, 2011

Title: The Thing Directed By: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. Starring: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Paul Braunstein, Trond Espen Seim, Kim Bubbs, Kristofer Hivju, Stig Henrik Hoff When you’re trying to live up to the standards, or perhaps exceed those set by John Carpenter’s The Thing, you’ve got your work cut out for you. While Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s version offers a nice thrill, it doesn’t come close to, well, replicating the elements that made Carpenter’s piece iconic. It’s 1982 in Antarctica. A team of Norwegian scientists travel across the snowy tundra trying to track a mysterious signal. Upon pinpointing the position of…

The Thing (2011) Movie Review

Friday, October 14th, 2011

Title: The Thing Director: Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. Starring: Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Kim Bubbs, Jorgen Langhelle, Jan Gunnar Rosie Well the first 30 minutes-and-change of this remake of a remake (1982 – original was 1951) is basically a wash for the most part. If you can plow through that portion then The Thing actually proves to have something to it; even though this is essentially the same screenplay from the 1982 version that starred Kurt Russell. The gist of the story is that a discovery is made just outside of a remote base on Antarctica in 1982. A group of scientists…

In Your Opinion: Warrior

Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

“Warrior” is a film that I haven’t heard too much about, surprisingly enough. But, the film, starring Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton, is doing well with both fans and critics. The critical rating, according to Rotten Tomatoes, is 82%. The audience has given it a 94%. According to the site, the critical consensus is that while “Warrior” relies on many cliches of the sports film genre, the film “transcends them with gripping action, powerful acting, and heart.” “It’s too corny to live,” wrote David Edelstein of New York Magazine, “But the picture is a slam dunk. I mean a ground-and-pound double-leg takedown. It’s really gripping.” “‘Warrior’ makes you cheer, sweat,…

Interview: Kurt Angle talks Warrior, MMA, Olympics, and future

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

It’s kind of funny to see a guy who has proudly worn the red, white and blue in the Olympics and professional wrestling, all of a sudden transform into a Russian fighting machine. But that’s exactly what Kurt Angle seamlessly did in the soon-to-be released film, Warrior. The current TNA World Heavyweight Champion has been toying with crossing over to MMA for the last few years as he’s had extensive talks with UFC president Dana White. “I don’t like the word toying, but you’re probably right,” he laughs. That said, Kurt candidly spoke about why he chose to stick with TNA; and if shooting Warrior reignited the flame for him…
