The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Jon Favreau has signed on to direct “Cowboys & Aliens,” which will be starring Robert Downey Jr, for DreamWorks/Universal. The Platinum Studios comic book by Scott Rosenberg tells the story of traditional Old West enemies, cowboys and Indians, banding together to fight an invasion of aliens from outer space in 19th-century Arizona. The project’s executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci wrote the script, along with “Lost” executive producer Damon Lindelof. Variety magazine has an interesting article up about the upcoming 2010 and 2011 movie seasons and how the major studios might be tightening their metaphorical belts in terms of major up-front salaries for stars in projects. One particular point they make concerns the upcoming “Iron Man 2″, directed by Jon Favreau. The Visual Effects Society (VES) has announced the nominees for the 7th Annual VES Awards ceremony recognizing outstanding visual effects in over a dozen categories of film, animation, television, commercials and video games. 2008′s “Iron Man” led the nominations with five, for scenes and work including the film’s armor HUD and the fan favorite “suit up” scene. Jackson’s role as superspy and SHIELD commander Nick Fury in upcoming Marvel Studios projects such as “Iron Man 2″ and “The Avengers”. Justin Theroux recently sat down to talk with UGO, and dished on, besides the DVD release of “Tropic Thunder”, the progress happening with the “Iron Man” sequel. Renowned actor Jeff Bridges, who starred opposite Robert Downey Jr. in this summer’s blockbuster “Iron Man”, recently released an online photo collection of his backstage and personal photography, which Bridges is an amateur practitioner of, from the “Iron Man” shoot. The rest of the photos an be found here, where Bridges documented not only pre-production meetings and intimate cast moments, but also his own character development process, specifically his character’s trademark, a fully-shaved head. Entertainment Weekly has reported that 20 year veteran special effects wizard Stan Winston has passed away on Sunday at his home in California. Stan Winston perhaps best known for his work in Aliens, Jurassic Park, Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and most recently in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Iron Man by director Jon Favreau. According to the report the four-time Academy Award winner Stan Winston was struggling with myeloma cancer for the past seven years, he was only 62. He will be missed.

No big surprise, but in a recent interview with actor Terrence Howard, Coming Soon reports that “Iron Man 2″ has already been slated by Marvel Studios. According to the report, shooting will begin sometime in March, 2009 for a 2010 release.
