DVD Review: Bridesmaids, The Tempest, The Conspirator, Dressed to Kill and The Sentiment of The Flesh

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

Too many romantic comedies witlessly hone in on the differences between men and women to create a heightened-stakes backdrop in which every interaction with the opposite sex is imbued with some sort of grand, gender-statement significance, which is of course then supposed to be neatly resolved and tidily put away by the time a paired-off happy ending rolls around. Co-written by Annie Mumolo and “Saturday Night Live”‘s Kristen Wiig, “Bridesmaids” instead focuses a considerable amount of its energy on female friendships, yes, but also the things women want in relationships — love, security, availability — that are the same as men. The result is the best female-fronted Hollywood comedy in years, and a…

Movie News Cheat Sheet: Tyler Perry Has Money, In Time Has A Lawsuit And Nic Cage Has Fangs

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

Can you feel the chill in the air? Winter’s coming! Okay, so many of you likely don’t live in the northeast and this is the Movie News Cheat Sheet, so there’s little room for TV references here, but fall is right around the corner! Even with Oscar season approaching, our Academy Awards potentials aren’t getting much love at the box office. After a weak start, Warrior took a tough fall and this weekend newcomer Drive lacked the zest to earn it the #1 spot, or even the #2 one for that matter. In other dark news, Nicolas Cage is apparently a vampire and Tim Burton’s take on Dark Shadows looks…

Bridesmaids Movie Review

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Title: Bridesmaids Directed By: Paul Feig Starring: Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jon Hamm, Chris O’Dowd, Rebel Wilson, Matt Lucas As a huge Kristen Wiig fan, I was very excited for Bridesmaids. And, as a huge fan of the idea of a female Hangover, I was very excited to see a group of crazy ladies get into all sorts of shenanigans gearing up for their best friend’s big day. Bridesmaids certainly makes due on some of my expectations, but also attempts to show off a more dramatic side and while that effort isn’t a complete failure, the parts I was looking forward to…

Sucker Punch Movie Review

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Title: Sucker Punch Directed By: Zack Snyder Starring: Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, Carla Gugino, Oscar Isaac, Jon Hamm, Scott Glenn High expectations can be a killer. Unfortunately for director Zack Snyder, he works extra hard to insert an insanely high outlook into every single thing that he does and lately, it seems to backfire big time. His brain is geared towards directing and visuals and that doesn’t serve him well as a writer. Whereas the basic concept of Sucker Punch combined with Snyder’s keen eye for the visually incredible had immense prospects, it diluted the script. Spectacular imagery without a sensible and engaging story…

Monday, September 13th, 2010

While promoting their new bank-heist thriller ‘The Town,’ set to hit theaters this week, at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 10, actor Jon Hamm praised the directorial efforts of Ben Affleck, but not before taking cracks at his co-star first.  PEOPLE is reporting that at a press conference, Hamm said working with Affleck, who also co-wrote and starred in the movie, “was an awful exprerience.” The ‘Mad Men’ actor added that “(Ben’s) a horrible human being. Talent-free.” Hamm then went on to say that working with Affleck was a truly wonderful experience. Affleck also told reporters at the film festival that “If casting is directing, then today I can…

Howl Movie Review

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

Title: Howl Directed By: Rob Epstein, Jeffrey Friedman Starring: James Franco, Jon Hamm, Mary-Lousie Parker, David Strathairn, Jeff Daniels, Treat Williams, Jeff Daniels, Bob Balaban, Alessandro Nivola Lacking an appreciation for poetry? No, I’m not talking about Shel Silverstein-type childhood favorites; I’m referring to the serious stuff, specifically, Allen Ginsberg’s work. If the answer is no, Howl certainly isn’t for you. Not that a moviegoer must like the person, the event or the subject a factual film focuses on, but Howl is so difficult to enjoy as it is that if you don’t find entertainment in slam poetry, the film is a guaranteed lost cause. James Franco stars as Ginsberg,…

There’s vivid imagery, explosive action and stellar effects all backed by a track guaranteed to get your heart pumping.
