Sacha Baron Cohen

Monday, November 14th, 2011

The casting list for Quentin Tarantino’s “Southern” “Django Unchained” has been one of the biggest developing stories in entertainment, mostly due to the against-the-grain casting, and it’s about to get even bigger and crazier now that there’s news that Sacha Baron Cohen might be joining the cast. According to MovieLine, Baron Cohen could be playing Scotty Harmony, a slave owner who buys Kerry Washington’s character Broomhilda as a “female companion.” Sacha Baron Cohen is an actor who’s “type” hasn’t been pinned down yet, such as playing the hero or bad guy it would seem. Or he’s one of those actors that don’t have a “type,” so it’ll be very interesting…

Night Catches Us Movie Review

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Title: Night Catches Us Directed By: Tanya Hamilton Starring: Anthony Mackie, Kerry Washington, Jamara Griffin, Amari Cheatom, Jamie Hector, Wendell Pierce Ten years is a very long time to be working on just one film, but that’s just how it goes for most up-and-coming filmmakers. However, in first time feature writer-direct Tanya Hamilton’s case, I’d imagine she looks back fondly on every minute she spent working on Night Catches Us, for the final product truly represents not only the time she put into the project, but her passion for it as well. It’s 1979 and Marcus (Anthony Mackie) is returning home to Philadelphia after having left town for quite a…

Interview: Tyler Perry And The Cast Of For Colored Girls

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Only Tyler Perry could get Kimberly Elise, Janet Jackson, Loretta Devine, Thandie Newton, Anika Noni Rose, Kerry Washington, Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad and Macy Gray in one room for a press conference. As much as these women were eager to appear on the behalf of their beloved writer-director, they were also there to promote the words Ntozake Shange who wrote the play upon which their film is based, For Colored Girls Who have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf. In their version, titled For Color Girls, each actress assumes the role of a woman struggling with a particular issue ranging from simple relationship troubles to more severe problems. Elise…

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Title: For Colored Girls Directed By: Tyler Perry Starring: Thandie Newton, Whoopi Goldberg, Kerry Washington, Anika Noni Rose, Janet Jackson, Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad, Tessa Thompson, Macy Gray It’s too bad Tyler Perry couldn’t take a cue from his film’s title, which was chopped down from For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, the 1975 Ntozake Shange play upon which the film is based, to simply For Colored Girls. Just like his name attracts massive amounts of moviegoers, it works like a charm when it comes to casting, too. Yes, it’s thrilling to print a massive list of famous names on your roster,…

Mariah Carey Backs Out Of Tyler Perry's Massive Ensemble For Colored Girls

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

Who drops out of a Tyler Perry movie? Perhaps For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf was just too much of a mouthful for Mariah Carey to say, but according to People, the actress is officially out of the picture. The film is based on Ntozake Shange’s 1975 play about a handful of women dealing with a variety of problems. Naturally, Perry amassed a fantastic cast including Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine, Anika Noni Rose and Macy Gray. Seriously Mariah? You better not be ditching this group to spend more quality time with hubby Nick Cannon….
