Joe Belcastro's 20 not-so critical thoughts on film in 2010

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

2010 is over. No more. Done. Finito. Some are more than happy to kiss that year goodbye, while others wish it would have never ended. In the realm of movies, 2010 looked great in terms of box office receipts. However, even with the second highest grossing domestic box office of all-time ($10.5 billion) in the books, let’s just say the quality of the product put out, is far from what the numbers suggest in terms of stellar entertainment all year around. Yet 2010 did have a few exceptional moments. With all that said, here’s 20 topics, accompanied by my candid/stripped-down thoughts, on what caught my critical eyes in cinema for…

Johnny Depp And Inception Are IMDb's 2010 Favorites

Friday, December 24th, 2010

You’ve still got a little while to go until I unveil my top ten movies of the year, but here’s something to hold you over: IMBd’s Top 10 Films and Stars. The results aren’t generated by critical reception or box office numbers, rather by searches for the stars and user ratings for the films. So, now for the winners. It should come as no surprise that top star of 2010 is Johnny Depp. Not only did he star in one of the year’s highest earners, Alice in Wonderland, but he’s just one of the most famous guys out there regardless. Twilight fans managed to snag the second and third spots…

Director Gary Ross Looks to Cast Actress in The Hunger Games Adaptation

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Director Gary Ross, who is on board to helm the film adaptation of the hit novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, is still looking to cast the lead character, Katniss Everdeen, Slashfilm.com is reporting. Ross told Entertainment Weekly that he hasn’t yet spoken to any actresses about the role. He will start looking for one soon, as the film starts shooting in spring 2011. Ross also said that Lionsgate, the studio behind the movie, isn’t pressuring him to cast a well-known actress. He’s free to cast an unknown, and also said “We’ll cast he right person for the part. Lionsgate has been great in the respect that they don’t…

Director Bryan Singer Wants to Cast Aaron Johnson in Jack the Giant Killer

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

Aaron Johnson, who rose to fame in this spring’s hit action movie ‘Kick-Ass,’ is the forerunner to be cast as the title role in the upcoming ‘Jack the Giant Killer’. The news comes after Andrew Garfield, a relative unknown who recently gained recognition in the critical and box-office hit ‘The Social Network,’ had to turn down the part to appear in the ‘Spider Man’ reboot. Bryan Singer, who is directing ‘Jack the Giant Killer,’ decided to look at Johnson after he also portrayed a young John Lennon in the recent ‘Nowhere Boy.’ However, New Line, the studio behind the movie, is still looking at other young actors. But an official…

Chloe Moretz Has Her Eye On The Hunger Games Film Adaptation

Sunday, August 1st, 2010

Ever since finishing Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games and the sequel, Catching Fire, I’ve been filling the time until the August 24th release of the third and final installment, Mockingjay, by keeping a close eye on the reported Hunger Games movie. Unfortunately, every since that special Scholastic event, there’s been zero development. During that event not only did Collins give some folks a sneak peek at Mockingjay, it was also announced that Lionsgate hoped to have a director for the film adaptation by the summer and to go into production in January 2011. Clearly part one never happened and I have a feeling the second won’t either. But of course,…

Kick-Ass Actor Aaron Johnson, 19, Engaged to 43-Year-Old Artist

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Up-and-coming actor Aaron Johnson shot to fame earlier this month after starring in the critical and fan favorite superhero movie ‘Kick-Ass.’ But People.com is reporting that the 19-year-old is garnering unwanted attention for his personal life, as he’s engaged to British artist Sam Taylor-Wood, who is 24 years older than he. Not only is Johnson engaged to his 43-year-old ‘Nowhere Boy’ director, whom he met on that set last year, but she is also seven months pregnant with his child. Taylor-Wood already has two other children, 13-year-old Angelica and 3-year-old Jessie, from her 11-year marriage to art dealer Jay Jopling. Though the two were engaged a few months after meeting…

Kick-Ass Movie Review

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Title: Kick-Ass Directed By: Matthew Vaughn Starring: Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz, Nicolas Cage, Christopher Mintz-Plasse Real superheroes are so overrated. Superman is super fast and strong, Batman’s smart and has a serious stash of cash and Spider-Man can scale walls and sling webs, but do any have the geeky innocence of Kick-Ass, a mouth as foul as Hit Girl, an equal affection for firearms and hot chocolate with extra marshmallows like Big Daddy or a Mohawk as out of control as Red Mist’s? Kick-Ass creates a connection between fan and hero like never before. There’s no supernatural prowess, just one average Joe showing another what he can do with a…

How To Train Your Dragon Edges Out Kick-Ass At The Box Office

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Kick-Ass may have kicked ass with the critics, but the same isn’t true for the public. After a massive marketing effort, the superhero flick only took in $19.7 million leaving it way short of Lionsgate’s rumored $30 million goal. Hopefully the film will have some legs and win as big as hoped as time goes on, but for now, Matthew Vaughn and crew will have to settle for second best. How to Train Your Dragon reclaimed the top spot just edging out Kick-Ass with $20 million, boosting its grand total to $159 million. Finishing the weekend in third is Tina Fey and Steve Carell’s Date Night, which held up quite well…
