Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ director Marc Webb has revealed several details about the anticipated superhero film’s character, tone, 3D sequences and humor to Comic-Con Annual magazine. Comic Book Movie has posted a portion of the interview, in which the filmmaker said he released a poster that said “The Untold Story” to reiterate his movie isn’t a remake of Sam Raimi’s trilogy. “There’s a new territory, there’s a new villain, it’s a different Peter Parker,” Webb said. Webb added that he decided to feature Gwen Stacy, played by Emma Stone, instead of Mary Jane Watson, portrayed by Kirsten Dunst in Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man.’ “I think that Gwen Stacy is a young scientifically minded…

2011 Golden Globe Nominations: Love And Snubs

Friday, December 16th, 2011

Hollywood’s award season is always a time filled with stress, especially for those who tend to follow every other list of nominations that pops up between now and late January. It’s not just stress from those distributors and studio folk who hope that their possible Oscar contender will make the cut, but from press and dedicated movie-watchers like us who bitch and moan the minute a favorite film of theirs doesn’t get awards love. Well, you can’t please them all, which seems to be more and more apparent as recent years have gone by. Perhaps it’s because I find myself even more engrossed in the fall awards season craze, but…

Melancholia

Melancholia Review

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

Title: Melancholia Directed by: Lars von Trier Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Kiefer Sutherland Putting his antics aside, von Trier is indeed a talented filmmaker, though I doubt that’s ever been up to much debate. “Melancholia” is his newest film following the heavily controversial Antichrist which enraged and divided audiences due to its graphic imagery. But in “Melancholia”, we have a different type of animal, and I’d argue that it could be equally as controversial–just not necessarily in the classical sense (which involves gratuitous violence and sex in today’s entertainment world). Like a majority of his films (if not all), “Melancholia” stars a female protagonist surrounded by utter gloom…

Kirsten Dunst Receives Restraining Order Against French Stalker

Saturday, December 10th, 2011

An L.A. County Superior Court Judge has granted a temporary restraining order to Kirsten Dunst against an alleged stalker for sending her dozen of letters and sitting outside her home, TMZ is reporting. The 51-year-old Frenchman, Jean Christophe Prudhon, was ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from the ‘Melancholia’ star and her mother Inez, her home and her place of work. He was also told to stop trying to contact her. Prudhon had visited the Toluca Lake, California home of Inez, on December 3, 2011, asking to see the actress. He also admitted that he sat in his car outside her home 10 times. Prudhon also sent letters…

Melancholia Movie Review

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Title: Melancholia Director: Lars von Trier Cast: Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgard and Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd Lars von Trier is a good example of the auteur theory at work today. His films are very divisive, relentlessly punishing and emotionally heartbreaking, but at the same time there’s this lyrical beauty to them, looming in the background, in terms of the human condition and its extremes. Even at his most basic and simplistic, stripping away the limitations of cinema with his Dogme 95 films, von Trier tries to nail down the limits of human emotion. In his new film, “Melancholia,” von Trier evolves as a filmmaker…

NYFF Interview: Melancholia's Kirsten Dunst, Alexander Skarsgard And Charlotte Gainsbourg

Sunday, October 9th, 2011

As someone who’s generally not a Lars von Trier fan, I feel compelled to encourage everyone to toss aside your preconceptions and inhibitions and give Melancholia a shot. No, it’s still not your standard, straightforward Hollywood fare, but that’s what makes it such a unique and genuinely special experience and, after chatting with stars Kirsten Dunst, Alexander Skarsgård and Charlotte Gainsbourg, it seems as though von Trier’s unique way of working is what made creating Melancholia such a genuinely special experience for them. Dunst stars as Justine, a newlywed who attempts to kick off her marriage to Skarsgård’s Michael the right way, but is plagued by depression at their wedding…

NYFF 2011: Melancholia Movie Review

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

Title: Melancholia Directed By: Lars von Trier Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård, Brady Corbet, Udo Kier, Cameron Spurr As someone with an appreciation for a more literal approach to storytelling, taking to Lars von Trier’s style of work has never been easy. However, with Melancholia, von Trier finds an absolutely impeccable middle ground, providing the audience with a uniquely sensible tale, but not holding back when dousing the piece with his authorial expressivity, giving us something that’s tremendously stirring. Broken up into two sections, the first part of Melancholia focuses on Justine (Kirsten Dunst). Right after marrying Michael (Alexander Skarsgård),…
