NYFF 2011 Work In Progress Screening of Martin Scorsese's Hugo

Posted by Rudie Obias On October - 11 - 2011 0 Comment

Last Wednesday, the organizers of the New York Film Festival announced there will be a special “work in progress” screening to take place on the following Monday, October 10th. They didn’t announce what the film would be but they teased it by saying it was a movie that would come out later this year and it was by a legendary master filmmaker. That’s it! Tickets went on sale to the general public on that Friday, October 7th, and if you were a member of Lincoln Center then it would go on sale for you on that Thursday, October 6th. Now I am not a member of Lincoln Center, although I  [ Read More ]

Happy Sunday! Or should I say, happy Harry Potter week? After seven days of madness courtesy of the grand finale of the eight-film franchise, the web world is drenched in Potter news, discussion pieces, lists, photos and more. It’s a wonder there was room for any non-HP news. However, we did get quite a bit of information on some other highly anticipated upcoming projects, particularly in the image department. Not only did we get a look at The Amazing Spider-Man and Underworld: Awakenings, but Total Recall and The Hobbit, too. It was also a busy week for trailers as far too many debuted to even squeeze into this Cheat Sheet.  [ Read More ]

Interview: Don McGlynn Talks Rejoice and Shout

Posted by bsimon On June - 27 - 2011 0 Comment

Some subjects are so big, and span so many decades, that it seems a fool’s mission to tackle them in anything less than the mini-series format. With “Rejoice and Shout”, however, director Don McGlynn deftly traces the 200-year history of gospel music, and its evolution from spirituals and early hymns to four-part, harmony-based quartets, along the way both soaking up and giving off influence to blues, swing, soul and even the hip-hop of today. Part documentary, part concert film, it’s a mind-bogglingly complex undertaking. We had a chance to talk to McGlynn one-on-one recently, about knowing and staying true to his film’s audience, the discovery of some amazing musical clips, and the extraordinary amount of  [ Read More ]

Title: Cameraman: The Life and Work of Jack Cardiff Director: Craig McCall Featuring: Jack Cardiff, Kirk Douglas, Charlton Heston, Martin Scorsese, Lauren Bacall, Kim Hunter, Thelma Schoonmaker, Freddie Francis and more Above-the-line stars get most of the credit and glory for Hollywood successes, but dozens if not hundreds of other specially gifted artisans labor on most big-budget productions, often going their entire careers without so much as an acknowledged tip of the proverbial cap from the moviegoing public at large. Director Craig McCall’s fascinating documentary ‘Cameraman’, then, attempts to right this wrong, shining a light on Jack Cardiff, who on March 25, 2001 — more than five decades after winning  [ Read More ]

This film seems quite overdue to Sinatra fans (including myself), but 1) a Frank Sinatra biopic is finally getting made and 2) it’s being filmed by Martin Scorsese. News has just been released today that Scott Rudin will produce the film, according to Deadline. Rudin joins Peter Guber and Schulman from Mandalay Entertainment who were brought into the project two years ago, the time when the rights were secured from Frank Sinatra Estates. Scorsese’s production company Sikelia Productions is also producing the film. Rudin was nominated twice at the Oscars this year for the films “True Grit” and “The Social Network”. Other films being produced are the U.S. version of  [ Read More ]

Paramount Pushes 'Hugo Cabret' Out Onto The Screen Sooner

Posted by Melissa Molina On February - 19 - 2011 0 Comment

Martin Scorsese’s first film where he works with 3D will be arriving in theaters a lot sooner thanks to a couple of nice decisions from GK Films, the production company financing his upcoming feature “Hugo Cabret.” After being under the secure distribution wing of Sony Pictures, the powers-that-be in GK Films wanted “Hugo Cabret” to appear in theaters during Thanksgiving weekend. When Sony could only produce a December 9th release date, they made their way over to Paramount Pictures to strike up a deal that suited their interest. Now “Hugo Cabret” will be arriving in theaters on November 23rd with Paramount behind the distribution wheel. Since the family mystery feature  [ Read More ]

Scorsese And DiCaprio Take On 'The Wolf Of Wall Street'

Posted by Melissa Molina On February - 17 - 2011 0 Comment

A short while ago the feature film version of Jordan Belfort’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” was nestled up at Warner Bros with Ridley Scott attached to direct. That’s not the case anymore, especially since “Wolf” is no longer in Warner Bros’ possession. Rick Yorn, best known as Leonardo DiCaprio’s manager, has secured independent financing for “Wolf.” Of course that means Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star in “Wolf” with Martin Scorsese directing the project. That’s certainly quite a sudden leap from where it was previously. “Wolf of Wall Street” focuses on Jordan Belfort, former kingpin of the notorious investment firm Stratton Oakmont, which became one of the most infamous  [ Read More ]

Shutter Island Movie Review

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On February - 20 - 2010 7 Comments

Title: Shutter Island Directed By: Martin Scorsese Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Max von Sydow, Michelle Williams, Emily Mortimer, Patricia Clarkson, Jackie Earle Haley, John Carroll Lynch Handling a major plot twist is no easy task. Letting it go unnoticed is not fun for the audience, but slipping and providing a hint so substantial will make the investigation work too easy. Shutter Island runs into trouble with both, but particularly the latter. Dennis Lehane’s novel is so effective because it requires the reader to use the mind and develop his or her own perception. Martin Scorsese’s film, on the other hand, blatantly lays out all of the details  [ Read More ]
