Title: We Bought a Zoo Twentieth Century Fox Director: Cameron Crowe Screenwriter: Aline Brosh McKenna, Cameron Crowe, from Benjamin Mee’s book Cast: Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Thomas Haden Church, Patrick Fugit, Colin Ford, Elle Fanning, Maggie Elizabeth Jones Screened at: Dolby88, NYC, 12/8/11 Opens: December 23,2011 Happiness consultants say that you should spend most of your money on adventures, not on things. You can get used to things, and after all, stuff is lifeless. Memories of exciting adventures can last a lifetime. Isn’t that what life is all about? Cameron Crowe illustrates this nicely, if with too much mugging by the small fry, in “We Bought a Zoo,” holiday fare…

Happy Feet Two Movie Review

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Title: Happy Feet Two Director: George Miller Starring the Voices: Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Ava Acres, Pink, Sofia Vergara, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Common, Hugo Weaving, Hank Azaria Talk about a versatile director. George Miller, who years ago was at the helm for all the gritty and violent Mad Max films, dials up some of the most tender and heartfelt moments depicted on screen this year with “Happy Feet Two.” As of today, the front-runner for Best Animated Film for 2011 has arrived. And for someone (me) who historically pans the 3D gimmick, it’s actually put to good use in this 105 minute presentation. We pick up with the dancing…

Margaret Movie Review

Monday, October 3rd, 2011

Title: Margaret Director: Kenneth Lonergan Starring: Anna Paquin, J. Smith-Cameron, Mark Ruffalo, Matt Damon, Jean Reno, Jeannie Berlin, Kieran Culkin, Matthew Broderick,  Kenneth Lonergan, Rosemarie Dewitt, Allison Janney “Margaret,” the first film behind the camera from writer-director Kenneth Lonergan in more than a decade, is a hot mess. Considering its behind-the-scenes wrangling and long road to release, however, that’s not really that surprising. In 2000, Longergan helped bolster the mainstream careers of Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo with “You Can Count On Me,” the engaging, Oscar-nominated story of a fractured adult sibling relationship. In 2005 he shot his follow-up, “Margaret,” about a troubled high school teenager who witnesses a terrible bus accident…

American Teacher Movie Review

Friday, September 30th, 2011

Many of the subjects here are inspiring, but, sadly, “American Teacher”…
