Director Danny Boyle, production company Rebellion, and the British magazine “2000 AD” have announced that a new Judge Dredd movie is in development, based on the popular comic character. Together with DNA Films, they plan to bring back the infamous supercop of the future to the big screen, in a new production with no ties to the previous Hollywood attempt. According to “Variety”, renowned Hong Kong comedian, producer, and martial arts actor and director Stephen Chow has dropped out of directing the big-screen adaptation of “The Green Hornet”. No new director has been announced yet though producer Neil Moritz and Columbia Studios are setting up to find one and hope to maintain their timeline of starting shooting the action-comedy in the spring. Summit Entertainment, after reviewing the numbers Twilight has produced so far, made the announcement this morning saying that the next film in the series, called New Moon, will hit theaters November 20th, 2009. Twilight was release November 21st 2008, so Summit hopes the reaction to New Moon will be the same as its first film. New Moon is scheduled to start filming in March 2009. The Twilight series looks as if it’s replacing the Harry Potter series, whose films usually open the week of Thanksgiving, but the only film that is thus far dedicated to the release week isn’t until 2010. Summit Entertainment announced Saturday that The Golden Compass director, Chris Weitz, is set to direct the Twilight sequel, New Moon. Just a few days after the company announced its severance from the film series’ first director over what she believed was rushed development, Catherine Hardwicke can move on and New Moon can move ahead. This Friday, 20th Century Fox will release The Day the Earth Stood Still as the world’s first universal movie release. That’s right, on the same day DTESS comes to theaters, the film will be shown in space as well. Fox has hired the Deep Space Communications Network in Cape Canaveral, Florida to transmit the entire movie, which will travel at 186,000 miles per second through space. From there, the movie can be intercepted and viewed at any point in our solar system. NBC has announced this morning that they will be airing the TV adaptation of “XIII”, the classic Belgian comic series political thriller, airing February 8 and 15, 2009. The television event will star Val Kilmer, Stephen Dorff, Stephen McHattie, and Jessalyn Gilsig. The adaptation, called “XIII: The Conspiracy”, originally aired in France this year on the premium TV channel Canal+ before coming to the US and other territories. In an unusual move considering the resounding success of the big-screen adaptation of “Twilight”, Summit Entertainment has not brought director Catherine Hardwicke back to direct the “Twilight” sequel “New Moon”. Variety is reporting that Summit wants “New Moon”, which will require extensive CGI work, to have a late 2009 or 2010 release date, and Hardwicke wanted more prep time before beginnings shooting on it. “New Moon”, the second book in the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer, deals more with werewolves that the vampiric Cullen clan of the first book, and thus would require more special effects to bring the lycanthropic characters to life on the big screen.
