Movie Review Round-Up: Joyful Noise

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

If you’re familiar with the entertainment business, it’s probably no real surprise that “Joyful Noise” wasn’t going to garner any favoritism from the critics. There were a lot of elements–the January release date being one of them–that pointed to the critics giving this a tongue-lashing, and they did. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the film, starring Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton, garnered a measly 38% rating, while audiences gave it a passing 75%. Overall, the critics felt that aside from Parton and Latifah’s on-screen chemistry and musical numbers, the film was flat. Let’s see what the critics had to say individually. “This overlong and forgettable comedy about a gospel choir is…

Martin Screened at: AMC Empire, NYC, 1/9/12 Opens: January 13, 2012 Neither character-driven nor plot-driven, Todd Graff’s “Joyful Noise” can best be called propelled by its music–a variety of styles including gospel, rhythm and blues, country and pop. The movie features performances from Dolly Parton in her first lead role in 20 years and especially Queen Latifah, whose character embraces hostility to her husband, her pretty daughter and her rival in the church choir of a depressed southern town in Georgia. Movie News Cheat Sheet: Shame On Howard Stern, Mike Myers And 3D

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

While the Cheat Sheet is normally packed with the usual suspects – The Hunger Games, The Dark Knight Rises and Twilight, just to name a few – this time around, we’ve got some rather unique stories to share. Unfortunately for Howard Stern, he’s part of the bunch as a hole in his team led to the leaking of Super 8. Another punch to the gut also goes out to 3D technology, as a recent study proves the extra dimension does nothing to enhance a story, rather only offers the potential for discomfort. On the brighter side, Kenny Ortega snagged a dream of a gig, as he’s been recruited to direct…

Valentines Day Movie Review

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Title: Valentine’s Day Directed by: Garry Marshall Starring: Taylor Lautner (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), Bradley Cooper (The A-Team), Anne Hathaway (Alice in Wonderland), Jessica Biel, Taylor Swift, Julia Roberts, Ashton Kutcher and Jessica Alba. The power of a consumer driven holiday is frustratingly overwhelming. We’re weakened to the point that we’re willing to drop hundreds of dollars on overpriced meals, greeting cards and flowers even though a simple ‘I Love You’ would have sufficed. Not only have I conceded and bought gifts, flowers, cards and candy, but I haven been suckered into enjoying one of the most poorly made films of the year, Valentine’s Day. Brace yourself; this is no…
