Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen Movie Review

Saturday, April 23rd, 2011

Title: Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen Director: Andrew Lau Starring: Donnie Yen, Shu Qi, Anthony Wong Chau-Sang, Yang Zhou, Bo Huang A heady blend of spy thriller, period piece political drama and martial arts action flick, Chinese import ”Legend of the Fist: The Return of Chen Zhen” reaffirms star Donnie Yen’s quiet, universal charisma, while also tossing more sand on the tired, erroneous notion that more densely plotted films from the Orient can’t emotionally engage Western audiences. The iconic character of Chen Zhen, originally created by writer Ni Kuang for the Bruce Lee vehicle “Fist of Fury”, is a cultural mainstay of both Hong Kong and mainland China – a…

Joe Belcastro's 20 not-so critical thoughts on film in 2010

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

2010 is over. No more. Done. Finito. Some are more than happy to kiss that year goodbye, while others wish it would have never ended. In the realm of movies, 2010 looked great in terms of box office receipts. However, even with the second highest grossing domestic box office of all-time ($10.5 billion) in the books, let’s just say the quality of the product put out, is far from what the numbers suggest in terms of stellar entertainment all year around. Yet 2010 did have a few exceptional moments. With all that said, here’s 20 topics, accompanied by my candid/stripped-down thoughts, on what caught my critical eyes in cinema for…

The Karate Kid

The A-Team Is No Match For The Karate Kid At The Box Office

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Ouch. The Karate Kid gave The A-Team quite a beating at the box office. What was expected to be a close race turned out to be quite the blowout with Jaden Smith snatching up $56 million as compared to Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Rampage Jackson and Sharlto Copley’s disappointing $26 million. This is a massive miss for Fox especially considering Sony’s product cost about $70 million less to put together. Fox better keep its fingers crossed the folks overseas are more receptive to massive amounts of action and explosions to ensure they get back their $110 million. The Karate Kid’s stellar performance also means the time has come for Shrek…

Shrek Doesn't Need A Pair Of Manolo Blahniks To Win Big At The Box Office

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

I know New York City is enjoying the fantastic weather this holiday, but is the same true for the entire country? Apparently few have opted to spend some of their extended weekend in the theater because, according to Box Office Mojo, business is down big time. This Memorial Day weekend is on its way to becoming one of the lowest grossing in nine years. Newcomer Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia couldn’t outperform last week’s big release, Shrek Forever After. The franchise’s fourth film remains #1 for a second week, dropping 38.8%, and earning another $43 million bringing the grand total to $133 million. Lagging far behind…

Iron Man 2

Robin Hood Is No Match For Iron Man At The Box Office

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Bows and arrows are clearly no match for Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit. The early numbers are in and Iron Man 2 held up quite well taking in an impressive $53 million in its second week. Robin Hood’s $37.1 million doesn’t sound all that bad, but can be seen as a massive failure considering the Ridley Scott/Russell Crowe epic cost a whopping $200 million to make. The brutal big boys were followed by the Amanda Seyfried romancer Letters to Juliet. That one opened up with $13.7 million while Queen Latifah’s comedy, Just Right, followed with $8.5. How to Train Your Dragon enjoyed yet another week in the top five pulling…
