Interview: Roger Corman And Alex Stapleton On 'Corman's World'

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Many independent directors have come and gone throughout the years, but the one who’s stood out the most over the years is Roger Corman. The “King of B’s” filmmaker has made a flurry of independent sci-fi, action, horror and drama movies throughout the years that include “The Little Shop of Horrors,” “The Intruder,” “The Wild Angels,” “Tales of Terror” and produced many films like “Death Race 2000,” “The Big Doll House,” “Piranha” and “Boxcar Bertha,” just to name a few. He’s always worked outside of the more traditional Hollywood system and has made many films that are more akin to his own tastes, creating a legacy of wonderful, entertaining films…

Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel Movie Review

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Title: Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel Director: Alex Stapleton Starring: Roger Corman, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Ron Howard, William Shatner and Jack Nicholson The explicit use of sex, drugs, nudity violence and gore in exploitation films may seem like a great marketing tool to draw in potential audiences, but the genre has often garnered harsh criticisms for its broad overstatement of the issues presented in its movies. However, famed B exploitation writer-director-producer Roger Corman has fearlessly shunned his critics who have condemned his movies and his film-making style. The new documentary ‘Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel,’ which was helmed by Alex Stapleton, succeeds in showcasing…

NYFF 2011 Movie Review: Corman's World

Friday, October 14th, 2011

Title: Corman’s World Director: Alex Stapleton For anyone who doesn’t know who Roger Corman is, he’s probably the most influential and prolific American filmmaker still working today. Not solely for the movies he’s made but the filmmakers that “graduated” from his “school” of filmmaking. Roger Corman, himself, has directed over 56 movies and produced over 395 movies. Wow! Titles that range from “Sharktopus” and “The Beast with a Million Eyes,” to “I Never Promised You a Rose Garden” and “Death Race 2000,” he was dubbed “The King of Schlock” and “The Master of B-Movies”. This documentary, “Corman’s World,” looks at his entire career and his influence on filmmakers and the…

Dinocroc Vs Supergator

DVD Review: Dinocroc Vs. Supergator, The Warrior's Way, Hell Bound and Boyz N The Hood

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

David Carradine is much on my mind recently, having just finished up his rather excellent “Kill Bill Diary” — a thorough, intellectually rangy and assuredly entertaining read of his time spent on Quentin Tarantino’s two-part revenge epic. A workaholic without necessarily the most discerning taste, Carradine’s sudden death at the age of 72 (in June, 2009, he was found nude in the closet of a Thai hotel room, the result of accidental autoerotic asphyxiation) nonetheless put the brakes on what just might have been one of the more interesting sunset career reinventions of modern Hollywood. After all, here was a worldly, well-read guy with a reawakened fire in his belly…

Rejoice and Shout

Interview: Don McGlynn Talks Rejoice and Shout

Monday, June 27th, 2011

Some subjects are so big, and span so many decades, that it seems a fool’s mission to tackle them in anything less than the mini-series format. With “Rejoice and Shout”, however, director Don McGlynn deftly traces the 200-year history of gospel music, and its evolution from spirituals and early hymns to four-part, harmony-based quartets, along the way both soaking up and giving off influence to blues, swing, soul and even the hip-hop of today. Part documentary, part concert film, it’s a mind-bogglingly complex undertaking. We had a chance to talk to McGlynn one-on-one recently, about knowing and staying true to his film’s audience, the discovery of some amazing musical clips, and the extraordinary amount of…

Green Hornet

DVD Reviews: The Green Hornet, Dinoshark and Megan is Missing

Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011

The January 2011 release of “The Green Hornet” may have seemed like nothing more than yet another calculated move by Hollywood to co-opt an existent fan base and limit its own commercial exposure. And it “was”, sure. But a film adaptation of this property — based on the original 1930s radio program, which has lived on in movie serials and comic books — was in the works for more than a decade, with a long list of actors inclusive of George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Jet Li and Stephen Chow all at one point attached, in various combinations. In fact, a visionary music video director named Michel Gondry was hired in…
