Fright Night

DVD Review: Fright Night, Catch .44, Carjacker and Maniac Cop

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012

A pumped-up remake of the same-named 1984 vampire horror-comedy, “Fright Night” represents a well oiled machine of goosed senses that unfortunately has no clearly defined motivating purposes, even within genre confines of its own story. Fun and engaging performances carry the movie a great distance, but it eventually bogs down courtesy of loosely defined stakes (no pun intended) and poorly incentivized action. The story centers on Las Vegas high school senior Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin), who lives with his single mom real estate agent, Jane (Toni Collette), and has successfully pivoted away from his geeky past enough to bag a popular girlfriend, Amy (Imogen Poots). Things get turned upside down…

Carjacked movie

Blu-ray Review: Carjacked

Wednesday, December 28th, 2011

Title: Carjacked Directed by: John Bonito Starring: Maria Bello and Stephen Dorff Running time: 89 minutes, Rated R, Available on standard DVD A single mother and her 8 year old son are kidnapped by an escaped bank robber who is trying to find a ride to his partner. The mousy ex wife of an abusive man must do what she can to protect her son and survive the night, riding in her beat up car with a dangerous sociopath. To summarize, this movie was boring and lame. Maria Bello’s character was so frustratingly idiotic, I wanted to punch her in the head for being stupid. Her character wants to protect…

Immortals Movie Review

Friday, November 11th, 2011

Title: Immortals Directed By: Tarsem Singh Starring: Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, Stephen Dorff, Freida Pinto, Luke Evans, John Hurt, Joseph Morgan, Greg Bryk, Kellan Lutz, Isabel Lucas, Daniel Sharman There are so many pieces to the filmmaking puzzle; it’s really no wonder so many movies can’t pull it all together. With the visual king, Tarsem Singh, behind the lens, Immortals was basically guaranteed to be imagery eye candy and, sure enough, Singh delivers big time. If only he’d learn to put the same amount of time and energy into honing his script, Immortals could have given 300 a run for its money. Way back when, there was a brutal war…

Exclusive: Nick Broomfield Talks Sarah Palin, Trashes Wasilla

Friday, October 7th, 2011

In his new documentary “Sarah Palin: You Betcha!,” director Nick Broomfield indulges in some of his characteristically bumbling, nice-guy provocation, learning more about Palin’s background and hometown while engaging in what seemingly becomes an increasingly futile attempt to secure an interview with her. Fortunately for ShockYa, the British-born filmmaker isn’t as difficult to pin down as his most recent subject. We had a chance to speak to Broomfield one-on-one recently, and although the conversation occurred just days before Palin officially announced that she is not seeking the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, the light that he sheds on her upbringing and early political career via the nearly three months he spent in Wasilla, Alaska, during his…

SDCC 2011: Interviews With Immortals' Henry Cavill, Kellan Lutz And More

Sunday, July 24th, 2011

He brought us The Cell and The Fall and now director Tarsem Singh is back, but in, well, a more commercial way. His latest film, Immortals, is a big-budget, effect heavy, action adventure featuring Theseus (Henry Cavill), a man hell bent on taking down the individual responsible for killing his mother, Hyperion (Mickey Rourke). Hyperion’s on a mission to find the invincible Bow of Epirus and will do whatever it takes and kill anyone necessary in order to get his hands on it. And that’s where the gods come in, as they’re left with no choice, but to intervene for the sake of humanity. The Immortals showing at San Diego…

Somewhere Movie Review

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Title: Somewhere Directed By: Sofia Coppola Starring: Stephen Dorff, Elle Fanning You can have an immensely interesting story with colorful characters, but if the pace at which the tale is told is slow, it’s an instant killer and in the case of Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere, it’s certainly deadly. Stephen Dorff is Johnny Marco, an actor who enjoys driving his Ferrari, hanging out with a pair of twin exotic dancers and chain smoking. With zero concern for his image, Johnny rolls out of bed just as his car pulls up to take him to a press conference for his latest film where he takes photographs alongside his well-groomed co-star. He’s a…
