Liberace Michael Douglas

Steven Soderbergh’s HBO “Behind the Candelabra” is a film that I can’t wait to watch . How can you go wrong with not just a Soderbergh film, but a Soderbergh film that stars Michael Douglas, Matt Damon, sequins, high hair, pancake makeup, lavish cars, even more lavish homes and tackiness? It sells itself. Just in case you don’t know, “Behind the Candelabra” is about the life of Liberace and his live-in lover, Scott Thorson. The film delves into Thorson’s first role as Liberace’s on-stage driver, his plastic surgery (at the behest of Liberace) and all the ups and downs of Thorson and Liberace’s explosive relationship. Of course, this is the  [ Read More ]

Title: Side Effects Directed By: Steven Soderbergh Starring: Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Mamie Gummer, David Costabile, Vinessa Shaw, Ann Dowd First Steven Soderbergh terrifies us of falling ill with “Contagion” and now he makes us wary of the medication that should make us better with “Side Effects.” Emily Taylor (Rooney Mara) had it good. She met a kind, handsome guy (Channing Tatum) with a flourishing career; they fell in love, got married and set out to begin a luxurious life filled with wealth and romance. Unfortunately, in an instant, her fairy tale was decimated when her husband was taken away from a lavish Connecticut estate in  [ Read More ]

Side Effects Movie Review

Title: Side Effects Director: Steven Soderbergh Starring: Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Vinessa Shaw, Ann Dowd The phrase “pharmaceutical thriller” doesn’t exactly mentally elicit the sound effect of ringing cash registers, so distributor Open Road Films has been taking a scrupulously crafted ambiguous tack with the marketing campaign for Steven Soderbergh’s new film, “Side Effects.” Fortunately, they have a great product, so the gulf or disconnect between what audiences might be expecting going into seeing the movie and what it actually is not only doesn’t matter, but might actually increase one’s enjoyment of it. A moody, neo-noir-style psychological drama with thick, intertwined veins of tragedy, romantic obsession, legal consequence and  [ Read More ]

If you’re like me, you might love to get a peek at the newest trailer for for the film. The film, starring Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law and Catherine Zeta-Jones, is the story of a pill that has some very dangerous outcomes: “SIDE EFFECTS is a provocative thriller about Emily and Martin (Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum), a successful New York couple whose world unravels when a new drug prescribed by Emily’s psychiatrist (Jude Law) – intended to treat  [ Read More ]

A second trailer for director Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Side Effects’ has been released. The thriller stars Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as an anxious women who turns to prescription medication with the upcoming release of her imprisoned husband, played by actor Channing Tatum. The ‘Magic Mike’ star seems to be a staple in most of Soderbergh’s movies nowadays. Judd Law and Catherine Zeta Jones also star. Similar to the first teaser trailer dropped months ago, this latest look doesn’t offer more to the story that centers on side effects of a drug that looks to result in murder and extra marital affairs. Perri-Best-of-2012-Thumb

While the large majority can come to an agreement on whether or not a film is good or bad, or pinpoint a particular element that exemplifies skillful filmmaking, for me, the reviewing process is still very personal. Some moviegoers prefer horror while others go for romance, some don’t mind a tearjerker while others would rather keep their emotions to themselves, and then there are the times when you just happen to walk into a movie and it strikes a chord because you just experienced something similar. Well, I certainly can’t speak to your big screen preferences, but I’m thrilled to share mine, a top ten that I’ve populated with quality  [ Read More ]

Burns and produced by Burns as well as Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Gregory Jacobs along with executive producers James D. Stern and Douglas E. Hansen,  [ Read More ]

Steven Soderbergh Side Effects

A new trailer for what is one of director Steven Soderbergh’s last films before his rumored retirement has debuted. Teasing his latest, ‘Side Effects’ warns of death and despair with Rooney Mara at its core as an unstable patient whose addiction to the drug Ablixa turns into murder and betrayal. Channing Tatum also appears in the film that reunites him with his Magic Mike helmer. Playing somewhat of a hallmark husband, if you look past his recent prison stint, Tatum gets unknowingly caught up in what appears to be a love triangle as he attempts to get his life back on track with his wife. Jude Law stars as Mara’s  [ Read More ]

Title: Magic Mike Directed By: Steven Soderbergh Starring: Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Cody Horn, Matthew McConaughey, Olivia Munn, Joe Manganiello, Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez, Kevin Nash, Gabriel Iglesias There’s no denying that I’ve got a list of actors I simply enjoy looking at, regardless of the material or their performance. However, in all honesty, I’m not usually one to seek out a film for the sake of eye candy alone. But Magic Mike is a different story and, can you blame me? While I definitely got what I came for in that respect, Magic Mike turned out to be much more than a star-studded peep show of a feature; it’s  [ Read More ]

Haywire Movie Review 4

Posted by Karen Benardello On January - 20 - 2012 0 Comment

Title: Haywire’ Director: Steven Soderbergh Starring: Gina Carano, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Angarano Espionage action thrillers have failed to hold viewers captive in recent years, as many of the genre’s recent entries have only served as platforms for the most memorable stunts by the male leads. Once again, Academy Award-winning director Steven Soderbergh was unafraid to push the limits of filmmaking by crafting a realistic female character-driven spy movie. ‘Haywire’ proves that women can be just as effective as men in any job they set out to do. ‘Haywire’ follows highly trained operative Mallory Kane (played by Gina Carano), who works as a highly-trained black-ops  [ Read More ]
