Movie Review Round-Up: Red Tails

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

One would think that a movie with the driving force of George Lucas, a script co-written by “The Boondocks” creator Aaron McGruder, a director like Anthony Hemingway and starring the likes of Terrence Howard and David Oyelowo would be good. Really good. Sadly, the critics, aren’t seeing a lot of good about the film aside from being a well-meaning film. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently has a low 33% from the critics, whereas the audience has given it a 73%. The general critical consensus is, according to Rotten Tomatoes, “Despite a worth fact-based story and obvious good intentions, ‘Red Tails’ suffers from one-dimensional characters, corny dialogue, and heaps of…

Red Tails Movie Review

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Title: Red Tails Directed By: Anthony Hemingway Starring: Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristan Wilds, Elijah Kelley, Marcus T Paulk, Ne-Yo, Cuba Gooding Jr., Terrence Howard, Bryan Cranston, Daniela Ruah, Michael B. Jordan, Andre Royo, Method Man Sure, a January release is never a good sign, but how can you have low expectations for a film about the feats of WWII’s Tuskegee Airmen? Plus, you’d think a script based on such a stirring true story would have enough of a head start not to fall into too many holes. Maybe I don’t know as much as I think about screenwriting, but I know enough to say that Red Tails has a…

DVD Review: Hanna, Captain America 1992, Bambi 2, BB King Live and A Horrible Way To Die

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

The revenge thriller “Hanna” – which plays as sort of like a cross between “The Professional” and “Run Lola Run,” with a pinch of “The Bourne Identity” — courses with an unflagging, forward-leaning vigor. It’s a smart, stylish, interesting and fun piece of pop entertainment, powered by strong performances and all wrapped up in an offbeat but engaging fairytale motif that gives the material a little extra zesty kick. Opening in the snowy wilds of Finland, the story centers on 16-year-old Hanna Heller (Saoirse Ronan), who has the intelligence, strength, stamina and lethal combat skill set of a soldier the opposite gender and twice her age, all thanks to her father Erik…

Trailer For Red Tails Released

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

The pet project of George Lucas, a film called “Red Tails” has a trailer released for film fans’ consumption. The movie, starring Terrence Howard, Ne-Yo, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Nate Parker, David Oyelowo, Tristan Wilds, Method Man, Michael B. Jordan, Andre Royo, and Marcus T. Paulk (from “Moesha”!), tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen as they fought the enemy in WWII and racism in the American Air Force. Since I am an Alabamian, I’m proud to know that a film about the Tuskegee Airmen has been made, but I’m also irritated that George Lucas is behind it. Granted, he didn’t direct the film–Anthony Hemingway is the director and Lucas only…

Liv Tyler Topless in The Ledge

The Ledge Movie Review

Friday, July 8th, 2011

Title: The Ledge Writer-director: Matthew Chapman Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Liv Tyler, Patrick Wilson, Terrence Howard, Chris Gorham A tapestral suspense drama about the intertwined romantic fates of a quartet of Baton Rouge residents – each wounded in their own way, and some more freshly than others — The Ledge exhibits a willingness and desire to let its characters bat back and forth opposing philosophies of life and faith more frequently found on display in literature or off-Broadway theater. An interesting character study only half-successfully masquerading as a kind of specifically plotted romantic thriller, writer-director Matthew Chapman’s movie resembles the smart and sensitive but still gangly teenager pushed out of the door, wearing clothes…

Wilson And Hunnam Duke It Out For Tyler In New Clips From The Ledge

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

What’s the way to Liv Tyler’s heart? Well, it’s either being a hardcore evangelical or a total nonbeliever because in the upcoming film The Ledge, Tyler’s character, Shauna, is caught between just that. Shauna’s husband, Joe (Patrick Wilson), is a firm believer in being born again, but her new neighbor, Gavin (Charlie Hunnam), doesn’t see the logic in Joe’s preaching. When Joe entices Gavin to step onto the ledge of a high-rise building, he gives him just one hour to decide whether to save his own life or the life of his love. The Ledge is available on Demand through IFC Films via Comcast, Cox, Cablevision, Time Warner and Bright…

Terrance Howard To Play Nelson Mandela Opposite Jennifer Hudson's Winnie

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Terrance Howard may be missing out on Iron Man 2′s massive success, but at least he’s got a new project to keep him busy. As reported by THR, Howard is set to play Nelson Mandela in Darrell Roodt’s Winnie. Roodt is set to put his $15 million budget to use when production kicks of at the end of the month in Cape Town Johannesburg and Robben Island. Had enough Mandela after Morgan Freeman’s performance in Invcitus? Don’t worry; the focus of this film will not be on the famous leader, rather his former wife, Winnie Mandela. That role went to American Idol contestant turned Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson. Winnie’s image…
