Fine; here is my obligatory Best of 2011 Movies manifesto

Thursday, January 5th, 2012

It had to be done. Personally, there seems to be an over-saturation of these lists every year (Best of this, what will be the best in 2012, blah, blah, blah). Although yours truly tried to think of angles to attack the act, or stigma, of top ten lists, I guess this time of year, they actually do serve a purpose. Plus, with this year in particular, many lists will vary – as we’ve already seen – within the critical mass. So, if people were to ask – and they have – what 2011 movies I were to endorse? Here’s 15 flicks that thoroughly entertained this guy. And as an added…

Box Office Predictions: Hop To Poop Jelly Beans All Over The Competition

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Can you believe it’s April? It certainly doesn’t feel like it, here in New York at least. Anyway, we’ve arrived at a brand new month, the final month before the summer season kicks off. Sounds exciting, right? Well, April box office numbers have a tendency to be rather lack luster. Last year, the month kicked off with a bang courtesy of Clash of the Titans, but from there it was almost all downhill. 2008 was a particularly tough year for the month of April with the box office never seeing more than $82 million in total for the top 12 films of a weekend. Well, we’ve got some pretty big…

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

The box office results for the weekend of March 25th- 27th has the lure of childhood innocence winning out over feminine violence. With “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” over-achieving, Zack Snyder’s “Sucker Punch” could not muster up much of a fight. Here are the final numbers (click on title for review): 1. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules ($23.75 million) 2. Sucker Punch ($19.05 million) 3. Limitless ($15.05 million) 4. The Lincoln Lawyer ($10.75 million) 5. Rango ($9.77 million) 6. Paul ($7.85 million) 7. Battle: Los Angeles ($7.58 million) 8. Red Riding Hood ($4.31 million) 9. The Adjustment Bureau ($4.29 million) 10. Mars Needs Moms ($2.25 million) Analysis The…

Sucker Punch

Box Office Predictions: The Sucker Punch Girls Storm The Box Office

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

We’ve only got two new wide releases this weekend, but they could be heavy hitters. Arriving in 3,100 theaters is the sequel to last year’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. Now, this one’s an easy call. Not only is it a sequel, but it’s arriving at the exact same time of year as the first. Should it put up similar numbers, Rodrick Rules is looking at a $22.1 million opening. Now what about Zack Snyder? This guy is a bit all over the place. His last two March releases, Watchmen and 300, both had big openings, however, his latest film, the $80 million…

Bradley Cooper wondering what to conquer next

Box office report: 'Limitless' outwits 'Paul'

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

The box office results for the weekend of March 18th – 20th has audiences looking to test their mental abilities. The brainy “Limitless” was able to trump a “Lincoln Lawyer” and the laidback “Paul.” Meanwhile, “Los Angeles” is rapidly losing ground. Here are the studio estimates: 1. Limitless ($19 million) 2. Rango ($15.3 million) 3. Battle Los Angeles ($14.6 million) 4. The Lincoln Lawyer ($13.4 million) 5. Paul ($13.1 million) 6. Red Riding Hood ($7.2 million) 7. The Adjustment Bureau ($5.9 million) 8. Mars Needs Moms ($5.3 million) 9. Beastly ($3.2 million) 10. Hall Pass ($2.6 million) Analysis With “Limitless” opening, the flick is set up for a nice profitable…

Paul

Box Office Predictions: Funny Guy Paul To Trump Battle: LA's Evil Invaders

Thursday, March 17th, 2011

Ready for a trio of newcomers? I hope so because this weekend we’ve got Limitless, The Lincoln Lawyer and Paul all hitting 2,700+ theaters. Let’s start with the Bradley Cooper starrer Limitless. Yes, this one packs a powerful cast including Cooper, Abbie Cornish and Robert De Niro, but so did Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and that one only opened with $19 million. Even worse? Wall Street had the benefit of an even more star-studded cast and being a sequel to a very successful film. Looking back at Cooper’s recent releases, the most comparable to this one would be The A-Team and that one nabbed $25.7 million, but in almost…

Battle Los Angeles decimated the competition

Box Office Report: 'Mars' and 'Red Riding' fall in 'Battle'

Sunday, March 13th, 2011

The box office results for the weekend of March 11th – 13th sees audiences buying to raw action, rather than rip-offs and over-priced animations. “Battle: Los Angeles” easily takes the top spot while “Rango” holds up relatively strong in its second outing. and Here are the studio estimates: 1. Battle: Los Angeles ($36 million) 2. Rango ($23 million) 3. Red Riding Hood ($14.1 million) 4. The Adjustment Bureau ($11.5 million) 5. Mars Needs Moms ($6.8 million) 6. Hall Pass ($5.1 million) 7. Beastly ($5 million) 8. Just Go With It ($4 million) 9. The King‘s Speech ($3.6 million) 10. Gnomeo and Juliet ($3.5 million) Analysis The overall box office is…

Battle: Los Angeles

Box Office Predictions: Battle: Los Angeles To Invade And Conquer

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Who’s ready for some out-of-this-world action? Not only do we have an actual alien invasion movie on the way, but a dark and fantastical version of Little Red Riding Hood and a cartoon about mom-kidnapping ETs, too. If you’re looking for a touching family drama, a loving romance or even an uproarious comedy, you can forget it. This weekend it’s all about space invaders and werewolves. The big winner is sure to be Battle: Los Angeles. It’s opening in more theaters than its competition and simply just has the widest appeal. If a miserably reviewed film like Skyline can open in over 500 less theaters with far fewer famous faces…

Theres a new sheriff at the box office

The box office results for the weekend of March 4th-6th sees a western lizard taming a beast, a bureau and the ’80s. With four new releases entering the party, the holdovers from last week all find themselves in a tightly-contested battle for a top ten spot. Here are the studio estimates: 1. Rango ($38 million) 2. The Adjustment Bureau ($20.9 million) 3. Beastly ($10.1 million) 4. Hall Pass ($9 million) 5. Gnomeo and Juliet ($6.9 million) 6. Unknown ($6.6 million) 7. The King’s Speech ($6.5 million) 8. Just Go With It ($6.5 million) 9. I Am Number Four ($5.7 million) 10. Justin Bieber: Never Say Never ($4.3 million) Analysis Let’s…

The Adjustment Bureau

The Adjustment Bureau Movie Review

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Title: The Adjustment Bureau Directed by: George Nolfi Starring: Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Lisa Thoreson Action movies today often thrive on numerous big-budget stunts and forget about creating developed characters that audiences can relate to. However, the new romance thriller ‘The Adjustment Bureau,’ starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, successfully takes the risky move of forgetting the old stereotypes that comprise the suspense genre to instead focus on its characters. ‘The Adjustment Bureau’ follows New York congressman David Norris (played by Damon), who has long been embraced by the people he represents. However, his political luck is running out while he’s running for the U.S. Senate. On the night…
