Barry Pepper (“Saving Private Ryan”, “The Green Mile”) has signed on to join the cast of the Coen Brothers’ remake of “True Grit” as “Lucky” Ned Pepper. The character was played Robert Duvall in the 1969 original. Pepper is joinging Matt Damon, Jeff Bridges, Josh Brolin and Hailee Steinfeld. Ethan and Joel Coen are directing from their own adapted script, and they’re also producing alongside Scott Rudin. Steven Spielberg is attached as executive producer. The Coen Brothers’ remake of the classic “True Grit” for Paramount Pictures will be hitting theaters on Christmas Day of 2010. The remake of the 1969 western stars Jeff Bridges as U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn, the character initially played by John Wayne. Matt Damon will also star as the lawman who teams up with Cogburn in the tale of vengeance when a young girl hires two gunslingers to help her track down the former ranch hand who killed her father. with one glad to take his life and the other hoping to collect a bounty. Variety is reporting that Jeff Bridges is in discussions with Paramount to star in a remake of “True Grit” that Joel and Ethan Coen are heading. Bridges would play the role that John Wayne did in the 1969 original film, which follows a 14-year-old girl who tags along with an aging U.S. marshal, Rooster Cogburn, to track down the outlaw that killed her father. Bridges last worked with the Coens in the cult hit “The Big Lebowski” in 1998. The picture reunites the Coens with their “No Country for Old Men” producing partner Scott Rudin. Variety reports that the Coen brothers are set to remake True Grit, the classic Western film that won John Wayne an Oscar. Based on a Charles Portis novel, True Grit is about a 14-year-old girl who, along with an aging U.S. Marshal and another lawman, tracks her father’s killer in hostile Indian territory. While the original film was a showcase for Wayne and co-starred Kim Darby, Glen Campbell, Jeff Corey, Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper, the Coens’ version will stick to Portis’ novel closer and tell the tale from the girl’s point-of-view.
