The official red band trailer for director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s recreation of John Carpenter’s ‘The Thing’ has been dropped to the web. The October release is nabbing a mix of opinions. While some are concerned about remaking such a production, others question whether Matthijs’ attempts where successful judging by the sneak peek. The movie, written by Eric Heisserer and John W. Campbell Jr. The featured cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Joel Edgerton of Warrior fame, and Ulrich Thomsen (The left Wing Gang). Although we did our nice gallery report on Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights maze “Hostel: Hunting Season” doesn’t mean we aren’t curious to know about the other mazes that’ll be terrifying guests in a week’s time. A new maze at Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights has inspiration from “The Thing,” Universal Studio’s upcoming film. Universal’s theme parks have partnered with the “The Thing” producers, Strike Entertainment’s Marc Abraham and Eric Newman (“Dawn of the Dead”) to create an experience that is authentic to the horrors the film will bring to audiences. Happy Sunday! Or should I say, happy Harry Potter week? After seven days of madness courtesy of the grand finale of the eight-film franchise, the web world is drenched in Potter news, discussion pieces, lists, photos and more. It’s a wonder there was room for any non-HP news. However, we did get quite a bit of information on some other highly anticipated upcoming projects, particularly in the image department. Universal Changes Several 2011 Movie Release Dates

Universal has decided to change the release dates for several of its movies within the next year. One such film is ‘The Thing,’ which was originally scheduled to hit theaters on April 29, 2011. The new movie is the prequel to John Carpenter’s hit 1982 sci-fi film. It’s believed to focus on the discovery of the alien craft in Antarctica, which was featured in the original. The movie is being helmed by first-time director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., and production began last spring. To fill its space, the studio has decided to movie up ‘Fast Five,’ the fourth sequel in the hit ‘The Fast and the Furious’ car racing franchise.  [ Read More ]

Eric Heisserer Writing Final Destination 5

Eric Heisserer, who wrote the upcoming “The Thing” prequel for Universal and the first approved draft of the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” remake, has been tapped to pen the script for “Final Destination 5.” Tentatively slated for release sometime next year, no director or casting has been announced, though Craig Perry will again produce the latest film in the franchise. The “Final Destination” films follow survivors of horrific massacres or accidents that narrowly avoid dying, only to find that they’ve disrupted the order of death in the universe, and are now slated to be killed in order to maintain the natural order of things. The Thing Prequel Starts Shooting This March

The prequel to John Carpenter’s classic thriller “The Thing” from Universal Studios has announced that they are due to begin filming this March in Toronto and continue till June. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen, Jr. is directing the flick, based on the screenplay by Ronald D. Moore (exec. producer of “Battlestar Galactica”) and Eric Heisserer (the upcoming “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake). Though unconfirmed, the prequel would be about what happened at the Norwegian base mentioned. No casting news has been announced yet. Stay tuned to Shockya.com for more on “The Thing” prequel. Marc Abraham Talks The Thing Remake

Latino Review snatched up filmmaker Marc Abraham, who funded such flicks as the Dawn of the Dead remake, Air Force One, The Hurricane and Slither, who talked about the foreseeable remake of John Carpenter’s 1982 masterpiece, The Thing. In the interview, Abraham says the remake will be a prequel to Carpenter’s film. “It’s going to be taking place in the same time frame,” he states. Translation? The new installment is going to end where Carpenter’s picks up, which could actually give better insight and understanding to the cult hit horror fans know and love.
