Chris Hemsworth will reportedly reprise his title superhero role in a sequel to his hit break-out film ‘Thor,’ Deadline is reporting. After the first film garnered positive reviews and earned almost $436.8 million at the box office, Marvel Studios is planning on moving forward with ‘Thor 2;’ however, filmmaker Kenneth Branagh won’t be returning to the follow-up as the director. He will reportedly return to the sequel as a producer, however. ‘Thor 2′ is expected to be released sometime during Summer 2013. It will reportedly hit theaters sometime after Marvel releases another one of its hit superhero sequels, ‘Iron Man 3,’ on May 3, 2013, in conjunction with Disney. Written  [ Read More ]

Thor 2 Coming Down the Pike, but No Director Signed

Posted by monique On June - 30 - 2011 0 Comment

CinemaBlend is reporting that a sequel to Marvel/Disney’s movie “Thor” is underway! The film is set for a 2013 release. For those that were fans of the film, that’s the good part. The bad part is that there is currently no director signed to the project, which means that Kenneth Branagh must not be coming back. Sources say that there might have been an issue with money as to why the director known most for his Shakespeare adaptations won’t return. However, Deadline is reporting that Branagh might be on the sequel in some sort of producing role because, thankfully, this isn’t a case where a director is mad at a  [ Read More ]

Box Office Predictions: Super 8 To Top Cloverfield

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On June - 9 - 2011 1 Comment

Last weekend was devoid of $80 million+ earners and it looks as though the same will be true this time around. The only two new wide releases hitting theaters are Super 8 and Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer and while Super 8 does have quite a bit of hype around it, it’ll likely find itself on par with another top-secret JJ Abrams project, Cloverfield. Back in January of 2008, Cloverfield opened to the tune of $40.1 million. As for Super 8, it’ll certainly benefit from its June release date, but likely won’t beat out Cloverfield by much, perhaps only $10 million, giving Super 8 a $50 million start.  [ Read More ]

We’ve hit June; is it starting to feel like summer yet? Clearly the box office is getting in the mood because we’ve already had three $80 million+ openings. Will X-Men: First Class make #4? I’m betting on it. Not only is First Class the only new wide release hitting theaters this weekend, but it’s backed by fantastic reviews and a dedicated fan base. Back in 2000, X-Men opened to the tune of $54.5 million while X2: X-Men United boosted that number to a whopping $85.6 million. Then, in 2006, X-Men: The Last Stand blew both out of the water, kicking off its 18-week run with $102.8 million. First Class will  [ Read More ]

Who’s ready for an extra long weekend? The brand new films in contention at the box office better be because, courtesy of Memorial Day, there’s a whole extra day this weekend to lure in those off from work and school. Then again, even without the holiday this would likely be a big one because we’ve got two potential heavy hitters arriving, and both sequels at that. Just about this time two years ago, The Hangover arrived to fantastic reviews and a relatively strong opening. A $45 million start may not qualify the film as a summer blockbuster, but its incredibly long legs and ultimate climb to over $277 million domestically  [ Read More ]

Box Office Predictions: Pirates To Dethrone Thor

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On May - 19 - 2011 0 Comment

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl opened with $46.6 million back in 2003, Dead Man’s Chest with a whopping $135.6 million in 2006 and then At World’s End with $114.7 million the next year. Now, the question is, can the franchise keep it up with the fourth installment, On Stranger Tides? I’m betting on it. Not only does the film have the weekend all to itself, but it’s opening in over 4,000 theaters. How high will On Stranger Tides go? I’ve got a feeling the franchise peaked with Dead Man’s Chest and, as At World’s End‘s performance suggested, will only go down from there, but On  [ Read More ]
