Newer shows that have only been airing for one or two seasons, including ‘Modern Family’ and ‘The Good Wife,’ have received the most nominations for the inaugural Critics’ Choice Television Awards, TVLine is reporting. The hit ABC comedy series received six nominations, including Best Comedy Series, the most of any show. ‘Modern Family’ was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Ty Burrell, and Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for both Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara. CBS’ hit legal drama ‘The Good Wife’ received four nominations, including Best Drama Series. Star Julianna Margulies was also nominated for Best Actress in a Drama Series. The…

I Am Number Four

DVD Review: I Am Number Four, Gnomeo and Juliet, Passion Play and Burning Palms

Tuesday, May 31st, 2011

Back in the day, Bill Cosby’s “Leonard Part 6″ didn’t have much luck introducing itself to audiences as an original product with a higher integer in its title, and the teen-lilting sci-fi action adventure “I Am Number Four” perhaps elicited similar confusion when it bowed in theaters earlier this February. Unimpressive domestic returns ($55 million), however, might not have sullied the chances of survival for this adaptation of the first in a proposed six-book series cowritten by James Frey (yes, the lying author emasculated by Oprah Winfrey) and Jobie Hughes. If it returns, one will have both international markets (where it grossed $90 million) and the presence of Teresa Palmer,…

DVD Review: I Am Number Four

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

Title: I Am Number Four Directed by: D.J. Caruso Starring: Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant and Dianna Agron Rated PG-13, Running Time 1hr 49min, Available on Blu-ray An extra-terrestrial teen posing as a high school student (Alex Pettyfer) and his guardian protector (Timothy Olyphant) seek out fellow aliens on earth while eluding an enemy alien race who are hunting them down. He is “Number Four” on the enemy hit list. Anybody who wasn’t entertained by this film needs to remove the stick from their bum. This isn’t Academy Award material, its fun escapism. I am a little annoyed they put an Adele song in the soundtrack, this film is not worthy…

Justified Renewed for Third Season by FX

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

FX has renewed its hit series ‘Justified’ for a third season, tvguide.com is reporting. ‘Justified,’ which is based on the popular character Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens from Elmore Leonard’s novels Pronto and Riding the Rap, was met with critical acclaim after it debuted in March 2010. The drama series, which stars Timothy Olyphant as Raylan, had the network’s second-highest series premiere ever. FX President and General Manager John Landgraf has said that ‘Justified,’ which has averaged 3.9 million viewers during its second season, “was a critically acclaimed hit series in its first season, but…has far surpassed our expectations this season.” He added that the show’s creator, Graham Yost, and…

Rango Movie Review

Friday, March 4th, 2011

Title: Rango Director: Gore Verbinski Starring the voices of: Johnny Depp, Isla Fisher, Ned Beatty, Alfred Molina, Billy Nighy, Ray Winstone, Ian Abercrombie, Abigail Breslin, Stephen Root, Timothy Olyphant There’s a perk in avoiding trailers, previews and the numerous production notes studios constantly send a critic’s way. This theory was applied to the 107 minute “Rango.” For the only element this guy knew of was that Johnny Depp is voicing the lead lizard. Aside from that, I was confused why no one handed me a pair of 3D glasses for my screening. Animations and 3D glasses frequently go together much like Jennifer Aniston and bad romantic-comedies join forces. Shockingly, this…

Elektra Luxx Movie Review

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Title: Elektra Luxx Directed By: Sebastian Gutierrez Starring: Carla Gugino, Adrianne Palicki, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Malin Akerman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Timothy Olyphant, Marley Shelton When you’re about to watch a sequel and you can barely remember what happened in the first film, you know you’re heading for trouble. Well, while there’s certainly trouble to be had in writer-director Sebastian Gutierrez’s Elektra Luxx, just like its predecessor, Women in Trouble, there’s something keeping you from completely dismissing this sloppy mess of a film – the characters. First off, we’ve got our titular character (no pun intended), Elektra Luxx (Carla Gugino). She’s pregnant and retired from the porn industry, instead, opting to teach a…

I Am Number Four Movie Review

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Title: I Am Number Four Directed By: D.J. Caruso Starring: Alex Pettyfer, Timothy Olyphant, Teresa Palmer, Dianna Agron, Callan McAuliffe, Kevin Durand, Jake Abel Movies about characters with super powers are inherently alluring. There’s something extremely fun about watching someone walk around knocking villains off the face of the earth. Oddly enough, what can kill the enjoyment of films like this isn’t shoddy effects or lack of reason, rather simply not believing in itself. If the characters aren’t entirely into the story, how can an audience be? I Am Number Four has just about every problem in the book, but it’s the major disconnect between director D.J. Caruso, his cast…
