Oscars 2011: Forget Who Should Win, This Is Who I Want To Win

Friday, February 25th, 2011

With just a day left to go until the big show, I’d like to bet you’ve had enough Oscar predictions – especially considering quite a handful of the biggest honors are considered locks. Well, I offer you something a little different; not who I think will win, but who I think should win. Best Picture: The King’s Speech Every Best Picture nominee achieves some degree of filmmaking prowess, otherwise, they wouldn’t be nominated in the first place. Rather than pick apart the elements and compare the contenders by the writing, directing acting, etc., this category comes down to something far simpler, yet something tougher to achieve – poignancy. Which of…

Toy Story 3 earns three BAFTA nominations

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Tuesday, Toy Story 3 earned three BAFTA nominations–animated feature, adapted screenplay, and special visual effects, according to The Hollywood Reporter. According to the site, this is highly rare for an animated film and further shows how visual effects are being rethought in the film industry. General Manager and Executive Vice President of Production Jim Morris stated that originally, special effects in animation were thought to be anything other than the characters. “Now in computer graphics, we have the same type of artists trying to accomplish the same sort of things as in live action – whether creating rain or snow or explosions. It is kind of the same disciplines. It’s…

'Toy Story 3' wins the Golden Tomato Award

Tuesday, January 11th, 2011

Movie review site Rotten Tomatoes has given Toy Story 3 the Golden Tomato Award, declaring it as the best-reviewed movie of 2010. “Deftly blending comedy, adventure, and honest emotion, Toy Story 3 is a rare second sequel that really works,” stated the website. This award tops off a year of praise for the Pixar-animated film. The film, showing the final chapter of Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of Andy’s toys, was nearly rated 100% fresh by critics. This would have made the entire Toy Story series the first-ever trilogy to be rated 100%. The film is also expected to win big at the Academy Awards this year, having been…

Joe Belcastro's 20 not-so critical thoughts on film in 2010

Thursday, December 30th, 2010

2010 is over. No more. Done. Finito. Some are more than happy to kiss that year goodbye, while others wish it would have never ended. In the realm of movies, 2010 looked great in terms of box office receipts. However, even with the second highest grossing domestic box office of all-time ($10.5 billion) in the books, let’s just say the quality of the product put out, is far from what the numbers suggest in terms of stellar entertainment all year around. Yet 2010 did have a few exceptional moments. With all that said, here’s 20 topics, accompanied by my candid/stripped-down thoughts, on what caught my critical eyes in cinema for…

Perri's Top 10 Movies Of 2010

Sunday, December 26th, 2010

It’s that time of year again; time to look back on the year passed and recognize the best of the best. It seems every year we complain the crop of movies isn’t up to par, but then the time to compile a list of the best of the year arrives and it’s increasingly difficult. This year gave me a particularly tough time thanks to my latest endeavor: film school. Over the summer, I decided to take my passion for film one step further and enroll in Columbia University’s Film MFA program. It didn’t take long for the education to collide with my work. As I learned more about the filmmaking…

Johnny Depp And Inception Are IMDb's 2010 Favorites

Friday, December 24th, 2010

You’ve still got a little while to go until I unveil my top ten movies of the year, but here’s something to hold you over: IMBd’s Top 10 Films and Stars. The results aren’t generated by critical reception or box office numbers, rather by searches for the stars and user ratings for the films. So, now for the winners. It should come as no surprise that top star of 2010 is Johnny Depp. Not only did he star in one of the year’s highest earners, Alice in Wonderland, but he’s just one of the most famous guys out there regardless. Twilight fans managed to snag the second and third spots…

The Other Guys

The Other Guys Dethrones Inception At The Box Office

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

It looks like The Other Guys was enough of a kick to snag the top spot at the box office from Inception. The Other Guys began its run with a nice $35.6 million marking both Adam McKay and Will Ferrell’s second highest opening. Back in 2006 Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby debuted with an impressive $47 million. For Walberg, The Other Guys comes in at number three behind The Perfect Storm and Planet of the Apes, which opened with $41.3 million and $68.5 million respectively. Inception continues its impressively slow decline just falling 32% in week four. It took in $18.6 million bringing its grand total to $227.7…

Inception Snags The Top Spot At The Box Office For The Third Straight Week

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

At least one film met my expectations this week. I predicted both Inception and Salt would maintain their positions on the chart forcing Dinner for Schmucks to settle for #3, but it looks like just one of the two was able to hold on. Taking the top spot for the third week in a row is Inception with $27.5 million, bringing its grand total to $193.3 million. Dinner for Schmucks came in at #2 with a gross of $23.5 million, which just missed out on being Steve Carell’s highest debut of the year (not including Despicable Me), falling short of Date Night’s $25.2 million opening. Salt took a 45.9% hit,…
