Writer-director Tyler Perry has been named as the top-earning man in entertainment, according to Forbes. Perry being at the top of the list isn’t surprising once you realize what a juggernaut he has become in entertainment, starting off with his deal with Lionsgate to translate his popular stage plays to movies. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate is getting ready to launch a network anchored by Tyler Perry. Lionsgate’s CEO John Feltheimer told financial analysts Wednesday that they are looking forward to the launch. “Tyler is one of those rare resources that one could launch a channel with,” he said. “We have a lot of options if we choose to go down that path.” Feltheimer also said that Perry is a “rare piece of talent that can bring an audience anywhere.” A Tyler Perry network could come about one of two ways, said Feltheimer. Breaking Bad fans rejoice; Gus is ditching Los Pollos Hermanos for the big screen. Giancarlo Esposito will join Tyler Perry, Matthew Fox, Ed Burns and Jean Reno in Summit Entertainment’s I, Alex Cross. The titular character, Alex Cross, comes from the pages of James Patterson’s book series and has already graced a couple of big screen productions, Kiss the Girls and Along Came A Spider, in which he was portrayed by Morgan Freeman. This time around we’ll see a younger version of Cross, played by Perry, when the detective and psychologist comes face to face with a serial killer (Fox). Rio‘s certainly had a nice run, but it looks as though its control over the domestic box office is about to come to a screeching halt. We’ve got four new big releases hitting theaters this weekend, one of which is poised to open in over 3,500 theaters, Fast Five. The franchise began its run with a nice $40.1 million start while the second film boosted that number to $50 million. However, the third only managed to pull in $24 million its first weekend out, but the fourth demolished its predecessors debuting with an astonishing $71 million. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that movie mogul Tyler Perry is about to launch his third television series on TBS. The series, called, “For Better or Worse”, will replace “House of Payne”, which will be ending after 222 episodes. “For Better or Worse” will follow Michael Jai White (“Black Dynamite”, “The Dark Knight”) and Tasha Smith (“Couples Retreat”)’s characters Marcus (a television anchor) and his wife, salon owner Angela. This couple was also in the Tyler Perry films “Why Did I Get Married” and “Why Did I Get Married Too?”.
