The Theatre Bizarre

The Theatre Bizarre Movie Review

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Title: The Theatre Bizarre Directors: Jeremy Kasten, Richard Stanley, Buddy Giovinazzo, Tom Savini, Douglas Buck, Karim Hussain and David Gregory Starring: Udo Kier, Catriona MacColl, Virginia Newcomb, Suzan Anbeh, Andre Hennicke, Debbie Rochon, Tom Savini, Lena Kleine, Victoria Maurette, Lindsay Goranson, Guilford Adams Six discrete stories of varying levels of effectiveness come together in “The Theatre Bizarre,” a macabre horror anthology that eschews the laborious weirdness of something like Christopher Landon’s “Burning Palms,” and instead focuses more forthrightly on crafting and sustaining a mood of uneasiness. The main commingled narrative ingredients are genre staples — sex, compulsion, paranoia and obsession – which work well for a movie that doesn’t shy away from…

Melancholia Poster

NYFF 2011: Melancholia Movie Review

Sunday, September 25th, 2011

Title: Melancholia Directed By: Lars von Trier Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård, Brady Corbet, Udo Kier, Cameron Spurr As someone with an appreciation for a more literal approach to storytelling, taking to Lars von Trier’s style of work has never been easy. However, with Melancholia, von Trier finds an absolutely impeccable middle ground, providing the audience with a uniquely sensible tale, but not holding back when dousing the piece with his authorial expressivity, giving us something that’s tremendously stirring. Broken up into two sections, the first part of Melancholia focuses on Justine (Kirsten Dunst). Right after marrying Michael (Alexander Skarsgård),…

Dinocroc Vs Supergator

DVD Review: Dinocroc Vs. Supergator, The Warrior's Way, Hell Bound and Boyz N The Hood

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

David Carradine is much on my mind recently, having just finished up his rather excellent “Kill Bill Diary” — a thorough, intellectually rangy and assuredly entertaining read of his time spent on Quentin Tarantino’s two-part revenge epic. A workaholic without necessarily the most discerning taste, Carradine’s sudden death at the age of 72 (in June, 2009, he was found nude in the closet of a Thai hotel room, the result of accidental autoerotic asphyxiation) nonetheless put the brakes on what just might have been one of the more interesting sunset career reinventions of modern Hollywood. After all, here was a worldly, well-read guy with a reawakened fire in his belly…

Suspiria Remake Moving Forward

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

In a Variety article about “I Am Love”, the new Tilda Swinton, film director Luca Guadagnino mentions that First Sun, his production company, is actually moving forward on a remake of the classic 1977 horror film “Suspriria” by director Dario Argento. Shooting is scheduled to start in 2010, with David Gordon Green directing. Though not confirmed, Natalie Portman is rumored to play the lead role in the film, which is about a new student to a ballet school in Europe. She then discovers that horrific going-ons are happening all around her. Jessica Harper initially starred in the original film, which also starred Udo Kier and Joan Bennett. Stay tuned for…
