Lay The Favorite

Sundance 2012 Movie Review: Lay The Favorite

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

Title: Lay The Favorite Director: Stephen Frears Cast: Rebecca Hall, Bruce Willis, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Laura Prepon, Joshua Jackson and Vince Vaughn Finding what you are good at is not always an easy thing. Sometimes people spend most of their lives drifting from place to place just to get a chance to try something they might be good at. But what happens when what you are good at is considered a crime in 49 states, but in one magical state, it’s a bonafide business. I’m talking about Nevada here. Once again, Stephen Frears explores notions of actions, choices and consequences. This time around he delivers a film that is heavy on…

The Dilemma

The Dilemma not doing well at the box office

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

The Ron Howard-directed comedy The Dilemma, starring Vince Vaughn, is not doing well at the box office. Over the course of the four-day weekend, the film only managed to earn $21.1 million, according to PopEater. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, or GLAAD, has attributed the film’s poor sales to the negative response caused by the now-infamous “Electric cars are gay” joke. Herndon Graddick, the deputy director of programs at GLAAD, said, ”Although there are a million reasons why a film can fail, we hope that Ron Howard and Universal will recognize from this that alienating audiences isn’t a recipe for success.” The original trailer of The Dilemma featured Vaughn’s…

The Dilemma Movie Review

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Title: The Dilemma Director: Ron Howard Stars: Vince Vaughn, Kevin James and Winona Ryder Vince Vaughn seems to have a dilemma on his hands. Throughout his comedic career, Vaughn has risen to popularity by starring in successful bromance movies that focus on the “man code,” including ‘Old School’ and ‘Wedding Crashers.’ He hopes to add his latest comedy, ‘The Dilemma,’ co-starring Kevin James, to that list. But unfortunately, at the age of 40, the non-committal, man-child role that Vaughn has repeatedly played throughout his career has seemed to have lost its appeal. Since ‘The Dilemma’s advertising first started, the movie has also caused nothing but trouble for director Ron Howard,…

Universal Removing Offensive Word and Terms from The Dilemma Ads

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Director Ron Howard has agreed to remove all jokes referencing the word gay from the trailers for his new comedy, ‘The Dilemma,’ Slashfilm.com is reporting. This comes after critics, including Anderson Cooper and GLAAD, publicly raised their criticisms of the use of the word as an openly accepted pejorative in the movie’s trailers and advertising. Last week, when the CNN host appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, he denounced Universal, the studio releasing ‘The Dilemma,’ which stars Vince Vaughn, and Howard for ”relying on a tasteless slur that promotes intolerance to help sell the movie.” He added that he saw the trailer while at a theater, and an actor said “That’s so gay.”…
