Box Office Report: 'Pirates of the Caribbean' still a worldwide treasure

Sunday, May 22nd, 2011

The box office results for the weekend of May 20th – 22nd has “Pirates 4″ cruising to a comfortable takeover in both domestic and international territories. Pirates’ 3D raid was able to steal a ton of “Thor’s” thunder, but ended up playing nice with the “Bridesmaids.” Here are the studio estimates: 1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($90.1 million) 2. Bridesmaids ($21.1 million) 3. Thor ($15.5 million) 4. Fast Five ($10.6 million) 5. Rio ($4.6 million) 6. Priest ($4.6 million) 7. Jumping the Broom ($3.7 million) 8. Something Borrowed ($3.4 million) 9. Water for Elephants ($2.1 million) 10. Soul Surfer ($1 million) Analysis “Pirates of the Caribbean: On…

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Box Office Predictions: Pirates To Dethrone Thor

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl opened with $46.6 million back in 2003, Dead Man’s Chest with a whopping $135.6 million in 2006 and then At World’s End with $114.7 million the next year. Now, the question is, can the franchise keep it up with the fourth installment, On Stranger Tides? I’m betting on it. Not only does the film have the weekend all to itself, but it’s opening in over 4,000 theaters. How high will On Stranger Tides go? I’ve got a feeling the franchise peaked with Dead Man’s Chest and, as At World’s End‘s performance suggested, will only go down from there, but On…

Box Office Report: 'Thor' still reigns; 'Bridesmaids' slap around 'Priest'

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

The box office results for the weekend of May 13th – 15th sees “Thor” keeping a bunch of “Bridesmaids” and a “Priest” at bay. Meanwhile, the rest of the top ten are just happy to rake in whatever they could during a rare summer weekend without any major release. Or more specifically, the calm before the “Pirates” storm. Here are the studio estimates: 1. Thor ($34.5 million) 2. Bridesmaids ($24.4 million) 3. Fast Five ($19.5 million) 4. Priest ($14.5 million) 5. Rio ($8 million) 6. Jumping the Broom ($7.3 million) 7. Something Borrowed ($7 million) 8. Water for Elephants ($4.1 million) 9. Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family ($2.2 million)…

Box Office Predictions: Thor's Asgard To Be The Hottest Destination Yet Again

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

With no Thor or Fast Five-sized openings this weekend, it’ll be the old timers’ weekend to lose. The only two newcomers hitting theaters are Bridesmaids and Priest, both of which are set to debut in less than 3,000 theaters. Hopefully Bridesmaids won’t be MacGruber all over again for Kristen Wiig as that one opened with a mere $4 million. On the other hand, a double take for Bridesmaids star Rose Byrne wouldn’t be half bad as her last comedy, Get Him to the Greek took in $17.6 million its opening weekend. While both that and Bridesmaids have Judd Apatow’s name attached, Bridesmaids might not be able to catch Get Him…
