Variety is reporting that Jeff Bridges is in discussions with Paramount to star in a remake of “True Grit” that Joel and Ethan Coen are heading. Bridges would play the role that John Wayne did in the 1969 original film, which follows a 14-year-old girl who tags along with an aging U.S. marshal, Rooster Cogburn, to track down the outlaw that killed her father.
Bridges last worked with the Coens in the cult hit “The Big Lebowski” in 1998. The picture reunites the Coens with their “No Country for Old Men” producing partner Scott Rudin.
No other information on the project has been released yet.

Cam Gigandet (”Twilight”, “The OC”, “Never Back Down”) has been cast to star in the live-action adaptation of the Korean TokyoPop manga “Priest” opposite Paul Bettany. Scott Stewart is directing the horror Western for Screen Gems.
Adapted by Cory Goodman, “Priest” is set in a world where humanity and Vampires have warred for centuries. Bettany will play a warrior priest who turns against his church to track down his niece, kidnapped by a roving gang of vampire bandits. Gigandet will play a sheriff of the wasteland world who is part vampire, and partners with Bettany to save the niece, who he is in love with.

Paul Bettany, according to a repory from The Hollywood Reporter, is in negotiations to star in “Priest,” a horror Western based on the TokyoPop comic book of the same name about a supernaturally-gifted holy man who battles demons, vampires, and other legions of the undead, led by 12 fallen angels and by the archangel Temozarela.
Michael De Luca and Josh Donen of Stars Road Entertainment are producing for Screen Gems alongside Mitchell Peck. Scott Stewart is attached to direct, having just directed Bettany in the supernatural thriller “Legion” for Screen Gems. Cory Goodman (”The Brood”) wrote the screenplay.

Variety reports that the Coen brothers are set to remake True Grit, the classic Western film that won John Wayne an Oscar.
Based on a Charles Portis novel, True Grit is about a 14-year-old girl who, along with an aging U.S. Marshal and another lawman, tracks her father’s killer in hostile Indian territory.
While the original film was a showcase for Wayne and co-starred Kim Darby, Glen Campbell, Jeff Corey, Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper, the Coens’ version will stick to Portis’ novel closer and tell the tale from the girl’s point-of-view.
Producer Scott Rudin, their partner on the Oscar-winning No Country for Old Men, will once again produce alongside the Coens.

First Look Studios recently released the latest kick ass movie poster for the upcoming western “Sukiyaki Western Django” by director Takashi Miike and starring Hideaki Ito, Masanobu Ando, Koichi Sato (The Guardian) and Quentin Tarantino (Inglorious Bastards, Grindhouse, Reservoir Dogs) as Ringo. Look for “Sukiyaki Western Django” on DVD from First Look Studios soon.
Synopsis: Set during “The Genpei Wars” at the end of the 1100s, the Minamoto and Taira gangs face off in a town named Yuda, while a deadly gunman (Ito Hideaki) comes to the aid of the townsfolk.

Hollywood Elsewhere is reporting on rumors that are confirming Josh Brolin will star in Warner Bros’ big-screen adaptation of the legendary Western comic character, Jonah Hex, to be directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor.
Warner has no comments on the rumors, and Brolin’s representative is denying that there is any truth to the rumors at all, though Hollywood Elsewhere claims their source has the deal being “locked down” sometime last night. The source also claims that the script is a mix of CGI and Western action.
