Fireflies in the Garden

Fireflies in the Garden Movie Review

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

Title: Fireflies in the Garden Directed by: Dennis Lee Starring: Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Carrie-Anne Moss and Julia Roberts The question of whether a family will allow their bonds to fall apart or do whatever they can to preserve their relationships is a common one many families experience on a day-to-day basis. First-time feature film director and screenwriter Dennis Lee successfully draws on his own life experiences to present a natural, honest and real story that aims to answer that question in the drama ‘Fireflies in the Garden.’ The director also successfully captures the conflicts parents and children face, and the hard work they put into saving their…

444 Last Day On Earth

NYFF 2011: 4:44 Last Day On Earth

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

Title: 4:44 Last Day On Earth Director: Abel Ferrara Cast: Willem Dafoe and Shanyn Leigh The end of the world seems to be a theme from movies of 2011. Movies like “Melancholia” and “Take Shelter” seem to explore notions of how people act and react to the end of everything. Maybe it has to do with the superstition of the 2012 predictions of the end of the world, but regardless, this notion has seem to captivate filmmakers. In the new film from director, Abel Ferrara, “4:44 Last Day On Earth” seems to follow suit, but in this regard, this is a more horrible failure than the actual end of the…

Boondock Saints

DVD Review: Boondock Saints, Kill The Irishman and Not As A Stranger

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

You must give writer-director Troy Duffy credit. Whatever one thinks of his talents or disposition (and I was personally on the receiving end of some angry, harassing phone calls after my review of his debut film), the dude knows perhaps better than any filmmaker of the past 15 years how to milk a living (marginal, one presumes, but still) from one fleetingly hot spec script, and movie. After being on the receiving end of some undeniably cruddy and cruel behavior from originating funder/distributor-to-be Miramax, ‘The Boondock Saints’ came out in 2000 via super-indie releaser Indican, and grossed under $50,000 domestically. After pimping movie merchandise and various home video releases for…

Waiting for Superman

DVD Review: Antichrist, Waiting for Superman, Once Fallen and The Black Sleep

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

Over the past two years there have been a spate of tiny, reform-touting documentaries lamenting the dismal state of American public education, including “The Cartel”, “The Lottery”, “Teached” and “Paramount Duty”, but the 800-pound gorilla was of course Davis Guggenheim’s “Waiting for Superman”. Taking its name from an anecdote about the intractable stasis and absence of any single superhuman rescuer as it relates to the education problem, the movie explores a variety of reasons for public school underachievement, and paints a fairly dire portrait of future American readiness in a global economy. So why return to it now, seven months after its theatrical bow, and a month-plus after its first…

Julia Leigh The Hunter

Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill Shooting Film Adaptation of The Hunter

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

‘Daybreakers’ co-stars Willem Dafoe and Sam Neill have reportedly reunited and have started shooting the film adaptation of Julia Leigh’s novel The Hunter. Daniel Nettheim is set to direct the movie, which also stars John Brumpton, Morgana Davies, Callan Mulvey, Jacek Koman, Sullivan Stapleton and newcomer Finn Woodlock. This will be the first film for the Australian director in 10 years, since he released ‘Angst’ in 2000. Since then, he has worked on numerous television series, including ‘Spirited,’ ‘Rush’ and ‘Snake Tales.’ The Hunter, which is selling well in Australia, tells the tale of the deadly search of the last Tasmanian tiger. While many people believe the animal is extinct,…
