We may live in a world of superheroes, YA adaptations and remakes, but come November 26th, some original indies will assume the spotlight. The Gotham Awards nominations are out with \u201cBeasts of the Southern Wild,\u201d \u201cBernie,\u201d \u201cMiddle of Nowhere,\u201d and \u201cMoonrise Kingdom\u201d all snagging double honors.<\/p>\n

But, of course, there\u2019s also quite a bit to report in the way of superheroes, YA and remakes. Shailene Woodley looks to be our new Mary Jane Watson and is also set to lead the adaptation of \u201cDivergent.\u201d Over in remake territory, Spike Lee lost Nate Parker, but picked up James Ransone for \u201cOldboy\u201d while \u201cTransformers 4\u201d may shake things up for the franchise, ditching Sam Witwicky for a female lead.<\/p>\n

1. Shailene Woodley x 2:<\/FONT><\/B> Shailene Woodley may have gotten overlooked at the Academy Awards last year, but should these deals go through, she\u2019ll be firmly in the spotlight soon enough. According to Deadline<\/a>, Woodley is about to seal the deal to star as Beatrice Prior in Summit Entertainment\u2019s adaptation of \u201cDivergent.\u201d Yes, it\u2019s one of many in the world of YA book to film adaptations, but \u201cDivergent\u201d is much more likely to be of a higher quality than the lot. As reported by THR<\/a>, Woodley also snagged the role of Mary Jane Watson in the \u201cAmazing Spider-Man\u201d sequel. It\u2019s reportedly \u201ca very small part,\u201d but will likely grow should the franchise roll into a third iteration and the storyline, \u201cThe Night Gwen Stacy Died.\u201d<\/p>\n

2. Gotham Awards Nominations:<\/FONT><\/B> The Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) has unveiled its nominees for the Gotham Independent Film Awards with \u201cBeasts of the Southern Wild,\u201d \u201cBernie,\u201d \u201cMiddle of Nowhere,\u201d and \u201cMoonrise Kingdom\u201d all snagging two of the 30 total nominations. \u201cBernie,\u201d \u201cThe Loneliest Planet,\u201d \u201cThe Master,\u201d \u201cMiddle of Nowhere\u201d and \u201cMoonrise Kingdom\u201d will duke it out for the honor of Best Feature while \u201cBeasts of the Southern Wild\u201d finds its place in the Breakthrough Director and Breakthrough Actor categories. Little Quvenzhan\u00e9 Wallis will be up against Melanie Lynskey for \u201cHello, I Must Be Going,\u201d Thure Lindhardt for \u201cKeep the Lights On,\u201d Emayatzy Corinealdi for \u201cMiddle of Nowhere\u201d and Mike Birbiglia for \u201cSleepwalk with Me.\u201d Click here<\/a> to check out the full list of nominees.<\/p>\n

3. Hateship, Friendship Gets Wiig, Steinfeld, Nolte and Pearce:<\/FONT><\/B> In come four reasons to keep an eye on Liza Johnson\u2019s latest, \u201cHateship, Friendship.\u201d According to THR<\/a>, Kristen Wiig, Guy Pearce, Hailee Steinfeld and Nick Nolte are all locked to star in the indie dramedy. The film is based on Alice Munro\u2019s book of short stories, \u201cHateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage,\u201d and focuses on a nanny (Wiig) keeping an eye on a wild teenage girl (Steinfeld). The girl sets the nanny up with her father (Pearce), a recovering addict, who\u2019s still shunned by the girl\u2019s grandfather for the death of his daughter.<\/p>\n

4. Breaking Dawn Might Not Be the End of \u201cThe Twilight Saga:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> There\u2019s been talk of continuing \u201cThe Twilight Saga\u201d for quite some time, and now that the film franchise is actually nearing its end, more details are starting to surface. Movie Hole<\/a>\u2019s sources claim that continuation possibilities include a \u201cTV show or film spin-off, merely set in the same world as the one in the movies but not featuring the main trio.\u201d Apparently The Wolf Pack is a prime option to take the spotlight. Even as someone who isn\u2019t really into \u201cThe Twilight Saga,\u201d it\u2019s tough to deny the push for more. The films aren\u2019t of a high quality, but with over two billion at the worldwide box office, how could Lionsgate\/Summit not keep it going? And who knows? Perhaps there are quality stories and characters behind all of Bella, Edward and Jacob\u2019s romantic melodrama worth exploring.<\/p>\n

5. James Ransone Takes Nate Parker\u2019s Spot in \u201cOldboy:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> It can be a tough break to lose an actor over scheduling problems, but in the case of \u201cOldboy,\u201d swapping Nate Parker for James Ransone is a solid trade. Hot off a particularly memorable supporting role in \u201cSinister,\u201d Ransone is filling the recently vacated spot and joining the \u201cOldboy\u201d cast as a doctor who works alongside Elizabeth Olsen\u2019s character, a social worker who strikes up a relationship with Josh Brolin\u2019s advertising executive who was held captive for 20 years and then inexplicably released. \u201cOldboy\u201d will mark Ransone\u2019s third collaboration with Spike Lee having appeared in \u201cInside Man\u201d and \u201cRed Hook Summer.\u201d (via Variety<\/a>)<\/p>\n

6. Aaron Paul to Lead \u201cNeed for Speed:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> Could we finally get that quality game-to-film adaptation we\u2019ve been waiting for? With \u201cBreaking Bad\u2019s\u201d Aaron Paul on board to lead \u201cNeed for Speed,\u201d I\u2019m more inclined to bet on it. According to EW<\/a>, \u201cAct of Valor\u2019s\u201d Scott Waugh is set to direct the film that has roots in the racing game, but isn\u2019t based on any one game of the series. Production is due to begin early next year with the film heading towards a February 7, 2014 release.<\/p>\n

7. \u201cTransformers 4\u201d Might Have a Female Lead:<\/FONT><\/B> With Sam Witwicky out of the picture, it\u2019s time to usher in a brand new \u201cTransformers\u201d lead and, according to Spoiler TV<\/a> (via ComingSoon<\/a>), it might be a leading lady. Apparently Michael Bay is currently on the hunt for an actress to play a high school senior. She\u2019d be the fourth film\u2019s main characters, but there\u2019s also a call out for an actor to play her boyfriend, a racecar driver from Texas. Still quite exhausted from \u201cRevenge of the Fallen\u201d and \u201cDark of the Moon,\u201d I\u2019ve got little to no interest in the continuation of this franchise, but shaking the format up with a female lead does hint at potential. Now we\u2019ve just got to hope Bay doesn\u2019t turn the character into a mindless Barbie doll rather than a human being.<\/p>\n

8. Andy Serkis to Direct \u201cAnimal Farm:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> Most know Andy Serkis for his motion capture work as Gollum in the \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d trilogy and Caesar in \u201cRise of the Planet of the Apes,\u201d but Serkis has been busy honing another trade, directing. He worked as the second unit director on all three \u201cHobbit\u201d films and 266 days later is ready for his own feature. According to THR<\/a>, Serkis is locked to direct an adaptation of George Orwell\u2019s \u201cAnimal Farm.\u201d Serkis explained, \u201cI think we found a rather fresh way of looking at it,\u201d and added, \u201cIt is definitely using performance capture, but we are using an amalgamation of filming styles to create the environments.\u201d Serkis\u2019 \u201cAnimal Farm\u201d also looks to be a film for the whole family, Serkis noting that his iteration of the story won\u2019t delve deep into the politics and he\u2019ll focus more on presenting the tale in a \u201cfable-istic\u201d manner.<\/p>\n

9. Trailers: \u201cIron Man 3,\u201d \u201cJack Reacher,\u201d \u201cCarrie:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> Normally trailer previews don\u2019t make it into the Trailers section of the Movie News Cheat Sheet<\/B>, but this is \u201cIron Man 3<\/a>\u201d we\u2019re talking about. There isn\u2019t much there, but considering the full trailer is due out on Tuesday, it\u2019s enough to hold us over for just a little while longer. A brand new trailer for the Tom Cruise-starrer \u201cJack Reacher<\/a>\u201d also arrived and it\u2019s got a bit more in the way of story to offer than the one released back in September. The action is on point and the plot is engaging, but it\u2019s tough to imagine Cruise managing to lose his massive persona in Reacher. The teaser for the remake of \u201cCarrie<\/a>\u201d debuted at New York Comic Con also hit the web and while it is on the short and sweet side, it does offer a nice sense of how Kimberly Peirce went about adapting the Stephen King novel.<\/p>\n

10. Box Office:<\/FONT><\/B> $30 million is a nice chunk of money, but when you\u2019re part of the \u201cParanormal Activity\u201d film franchise, you expect something more along the lines of a $40 million+ opening weekend. With none of the newcomers performing particularly well, the door was wide open for \u201cArgo\u201d to take in a nice chunk of cash and it certainly did. The film dropped a mere 14.6%, earning another $16.6 million, bringing its domestic grand total to $43.2 million, just shy of its $44.5 million budget. \u201cHotel Transylvania\u201d continues to enjoy its long legs, losing just 21.7% of its weekend three profits for a $13.5 million fourth weekend out. Even \u201cTaken 2\u201d managed to hold on strong. After dropping a whopping 55.8% from weekend one to two, the sequel only lost 38.7% of its weekend two profits, giving it a total $13.4 million this time around. Rounding out the top five is new entry \u201cAlex Cross,\u201d a major disappointment with a $4,628 per theater average and $11.8 million opening total, an all-time low for Tyler Perry.
