The box office results for the weekend of October 26th – 28th has “old” Argo<\/em> fighting off the assortment of new guys in becoming a two-time champ at the cinemas. Of the four new releases, only Cloud Atlas<\/em> and Silent Hill: Revelation 3D<\/em> were able to gain some traction with audiences. Here are the studio estimates:<\/p>\n

1. Argo ($12.3 million)<\/p>\n

2. Hotel Transylvania ($9.5 million)<\/p>\n

3. Cloud Atlas ($9.4 million)<\/p>\n

4. Paranormal Activity 4 ($8.6 million)<\/p>\n

5. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D ($8 million)<\/p>\n

6. Taken 2 ($8 million)<\/p>\n

7. Here Comes the Boom ($5.5 million)<\/p>\n

8. Sinister ($5 million)<\/p>\n

9. Alex Cross($5 million)<\/p>\n

10. Fun Size ($4 million)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Analysis<\/p>\n

Unless Cloud Atlas<\/strong><\/em> plays huge overseas, that $102 million production budget is going washout any celebration the producers\/investors were planning on having. That’s all their is to say about this polarizing flick. Flop Alert<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D<\/strong><\/em> ironically is having a timing issue, despite being a horror product releasing right before Halloween. Based off the popular video game, the second installment released 6 years after the successful (financially – $46.9 million domestically) first go around – which was slammed by both the lovely critics and audiences. Even fans of the game were not pleased. So that could explain the delay for this critically ravaged sequel. With a production budget of $20 million, producers will need a repeat of the first installments’ international performance ($50 million).<\/p>\n

The other two newbies, Fun Size<\/strong><\/em> and Chasing Mavericks<\/strong><\/em>, obviously bombed, and will be banking on a DVD\/On-Demand run in a few months.<\/p>\n

And then there’s the pride of the current box office, Argo<\/strong><\/em>. In week #3 the Ben Affleck directed period piece is now up to $60.7 million stateside. But the more impressive feat is falling back into the #1 spot after being dethroned last week. Then again, the theater selections are over-saturated at the moment, and everything is spread-thin.<\/p>\n

Hotel Transylvania<\/strong><\/em> currently holds the longest streak in the top ten with 5 weeks. The animated Halloween “trick” is up to $130.4 million domestically.<\/p>\n

This Friday, we get Flight<\/em>, The Man with the Iron Fists<\/em> and the animated Wreck-It Ralph<\/em>. Reviews will be right here my fellow Shockers!<\/p>\n
