It really is the most wonderful time of year. We kick off the month of December with a Movie News Cheat Sheet<\/B> packed with only positive and happy news!<\/p>\n

\u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d fans will be thrilled with the group of clips that just hit the net, showing off tunes sung by Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman and more. The Hugh Jackman support continues with news that he could bring Wolverine to the \u201cX-Men: First Class\u201d sequel, \u201cX-Men: Days of Future Past.\u201d<\/p>\n

With awards season and the Sundance Film Festival on the horizon, it\u2019s all love and praise for the best of the best independent filmmakers have to offer, \u201cSilver Linings Playbook\u201d with a total of five Spirit Award nominations and films like \u201cAin\u2019t Them Bodies Saints,\u201d \u201cKill Your Darlings,\u201d \u201cThe Lifeguard\u201d and more all making their world premiere in Park City in January.<\/p>\n

1. \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d Clips:<\/FONT><\/B> \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d is still a few weeks away, but the marketing campaign is in full swing, Universal unveiling five clips from the highly anticipated film. First<\/a> up is Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne\u2019s magical moment singing \u201cA Heart Full of Love.\u201d The second<\/a> one gives us a new look at our main man, Hugh Jackman, singing \u201cWho Am I\u201d while the third<\/a> introduces the film\u2019s \u00c9ponine, newcomer Samantha Barks singing \u201cOn My Own.\u201d In clip #4<\/a> Russell Crowe\u2019s Javert does a number about Jean Valjean\u2019s release and the strict restrictions of his parole. Last up<\/a> is Anne Hathaway as Fantine singing \u201cAt the End of the Day\u201d alongside her rather ruthless coworkers at Valjean\u2019s factory.<\/p>\n

2. Sundance Films Announced:<\/FONT><\/B> The Sundance Film Festival is right around the corner and the Sundance Institute has unveiled quite the lineup for the event. Notable entries in the US Dramatic Competition include Jill Soloway\u2019s \u201cAfternoon Delight\u201d featuring Kathryn Hahn, Juno Temple, Josh Radnor and Jane Lynch. We\u2019ve also got the Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster-starrer \u201cAin\u2019t Them Bodies Saints\u201d and Lake Bell\u2019s feature directorial debut, \u201cIn a World \u2026\u201d The film detailing Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs\u2019 time at Columbia University in the 1940s, \u201cKill Your Darlings,\u201d is due to screen, as is James Ponsoldt\u2019s \u201cThe Spectacular Now.\u201d The festival\u2019s Spotlight segment will feature Sarah Polley\u2019s latest, the documentary \u201cStories We Tell\u201d as well as \u201cMud\u201d with Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland and Reese Witherspoon. \u201cHell Baby\u201d starring Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb will screen in Park City at Midnight as will the \u201cVHS\u201d sequel, \u201cS-VHS.\u201d Head on over to the Sundance website<\/a> for the full list of films.<\/p>\n

3. Wolverine May Join \u201cX-Men: Days of Future Past:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> \u201cX-Men: First Class\u201d may have earned a sequel, but that doesn\u2019t mean it doesn\u2019t need a little more Wolverine to spice it up. According to THR<\/a>, Hugh Jackman is currently in negotiations to join \u201cX-Men: Days of Future Past,\u201d which is the \u201cFirst Class\u201d sequel, but will highlight actors for the original trilogy. Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are due back as Professor Charles Xavier and Magneto as are their younger counterparts, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. The plot of \u201cDays of Future Past\u201d comes from two issues of \u201cUncanny X-Men,\u201d some of which takes place in an alternate future where most mutants have been hunted and killed, and the remaining ones are forced to live in concentration camps. The present day material shows what the X-Men try to do to change that future.<\/p>\n

4. \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy\u201d Cast Short List:<\/FONT><\/B> Marvel has possibly zeroed in on James Gunn to direct so now it\u2019s on to casting Peter Quill, the main man of the \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy.\u201d According to Deadline<\/a>, the studio has a short list including Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace and Eddie Redmayne. While all are up for the role, Deadline notes that there might be additional actors in the running, as there have been rumblings about Garrett Hedlund, James Marsden and Sullivan Stapleton, too. I know little to nothing about \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy,\u201d but this is a pretty wide range of talent here. A Peter Quill played by Redmayne would likely be wildly different from one played by Edgerton.<\/p>\n

5. Joseph Gordon-Levitt for Batman:<\/FONT><\/B> HitFix<\/a> dropped a big bomb this week, claiming Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play Batman in \u201cJustice League.\u201d However, Gordon-Levitt\u2019s reps shot back strong telling Hollywood.com<\/a> that the claim isn\u2019t true. HitFix responded by adding a little something to the original article, noting that reps do tend to deny things that aren\u2019t ready to be made public, but \u201cWe remain confident in our sources and our reporting, and look forward to further developments.\u201d I\u2019m going with HitFix on this one. The post-credit \u201cDark Knight Rises\u201d ending has to mean something\u2019s coming.<\/p>\n

6. Independent Spirit Award Nominees:<\/FONT><\/B> The Independent Spirit Awards could wind up being the night of \u201cSilver Linings Playbook.\u201d The film snagged five nominations including Best Feature, Best Director for David O. Russell, Best Female Lead for Jennifer Lawrence, Best Male Lead for Bradley Cooper and Best Screenplay. As much as I\u2019d like to see little Quvenzhane Wallis of \u201cBeasts of the Southern Wild\u201d walk off with Best Female Lead honor, Lawrence has got to be the frontrunner. \u201cFill the Void,\u201d \u201cGimme the Loot,\u201d \u201cSafety Not Guaranteed,\u201d \u201cSound of My Voice\u201d and \u201cThe Perks of Being A Wallflower\u201d will all duke it out for the Best First Feature honor while it\u2019s \u201cFill the Void,\u201d \u201cSafety Not Guaranteed,\u201d \u201cRobot & Frank,\u201d \u201cCeleste & Jesse Forever\u201d and \u201cGayby\u201d going for Best First Screenplay. 7. Top Three for \u201cCinderella:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> Disney is hard at work on a new \u201cCinderella\u201d movie and is hoping to use it to turn one lucky young actress into a star. Should Alicia Vikander or Gabriella Wilde win the role, it could certainly give their careers quite the boost, but Saoirse Ronan is also in the running and it\u2019s quite obvious that she\u2019s sitting pretty, \u201cCinderella\u201d or no \u201cCinderella.\u201d Director Mark Romanek already has Cate Blanchett in negotiations for the role of the evil stepmother and, as Variety<\/a> points out, she and Ronan were close to collaborating on Disney\u2019s \u201cOrder of the Seven,\u201d but Universal and Relativity got to Snow White first with \u201cSnow White and the Huntsman\u201d and \u201cMirror Mirror,\u201d respectively. Apparently Ronan\u2019s attachment to \u201cGrand Budapest Hotel\u201d and \u201cMary Queen of Scots\u201d could keep her from fitting \u201cCinderella\u201d into her schedule, but apparently both Vikander and Wilde are ones to watch, so they could be solid options as well.<\/p>\n

8. \u201cPacific Rim\u201d Viral Marketing Campaign Underway:<\/FONT><\/B> The \u201cPacific Rim\u201d viral campaign kicked off and kicked off strong, first unveiling a brand new website, Pan Pacific Defense<\/a>, which led to the film\u2019s first viral video<\/a>, a test of the Kaiju Emergency Alert System. The Kaiju himself wasn\u2019t far behind, this mock news report<\/a> of a Kaiju devastating San Francisco turning up next. But have no fear, the Jaeger robot is here! Pan Pacific Defense also has several wildly detailed blueprints<\/a> of the human-piloted Jaeger robots meant to defend people from the Kaiju.<\/p>\n

9. Trailers: \u201cBlack Rock,\u201d \u201cA Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III,\u201d \u201cWarm Bodies:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> It doesn\u2019t matter how many times the ladies of \u201cBlack Rock<\/a>\u201d tell each other how awesome their weekend away will be; there will still be three ruthless guys on the island ready to ruin it. It also doesn\u2019t matter that the film\u2019s trailer is somewhat enthralling and intriguing; its lackluster Sundance buzz will still be there to ruin that. A new trailer offers a glimpse of \u201cA Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III<\/a>\u201d and proves that the inside of the mind of Charles Swan III is colorful, but a strange, strange place. Cowboys, Indians, a car with eggs and bacon on it, the Secret Society of Ball Busters \u2013 maybe it\u2019ll all make more sense in context. We\u2019ve also got a brand new 60-second trailer for \u201cWarm Bodies<\/a>\u201d and not only is yours truly in it (or at least a teeny tiny speck of yours truly), but it proves this one might be much more than your average surface value supernatural romance, as it maintains the tone but offers a fresher perspective.<\/p>\n

10. Box Office:<\/FONT><\/B> Moviegoers spread the wealth at the box office this weekend. \u201cThe Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn \u2013 Part 2\u201d stayed on top with a $17.4 million weekend three haul, but the rest weren\u2019t far behind, particularly \u201cSkyfall,\u201d which nearly caught \u201cBreaking Dawn\u201d with a $17 million total. \u201cLincoln\u201d nestled in at #3 with $13.509 million while \u201cRise of the Guardians\u201d came in just behind with $13 million flat. \u201cLife of Pi\u201d rounds out the top five with a 46.6% loss and $12 million for its second weekend out. Newcomers \u201cKilling Them Softly\u201d and \u201cThe Collection\u201d didn\u2019t make much of a dent, the former only accumulating $7 million on a mere $2,888 per theater average and the latter with just $3.4 million and $2,430 per theater.
