Tomorrow is a big day for Peter Jackson. Will a 266-day shooting schedule be worth it? Having seen \u201cThe Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,\u201d I\u2019m betting there\u2019s a good chance \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d fans won\u2019t get the same satisfaction from the start of the new series, but that isn\u2019t going to stop anyone from giving it a go. Every film of \u201cThe Lord of the Rings\u201d opened this very same weekend, \u201cThe Fellowship of the Ring\u201d kicking things off fairly strong with $47 million, \u201cThe Two Towers\u201d bumping up the opening weekend haul to $62 million and then \u201cThe Return of the King\u201d climbing even further, earning $72 million its first weekend out. Clearly is was a steady hike up for \u201cLord of the Rings,\u201d but it could be the reverse for \u201cThe Hobbit,\u201d \u201cAn Unexpected Journey\u201d likely to make a killing, perhaps even topping \u201cReturn of the King\u201d with $82 million, but then earnings dipping down as the series continues.<\/p>\n

With no other newcomers entering the race, it\u2019ll come down to stamina and\/or theater count changes for the rest of the films. \u201cSkyfall\u201d is losing 477 theaters, but \u201cRise of the Guardians\u201d is waving goodbye to some as well, so \u201cSkyfall\u201d should be able to secure the second position with $7 million. If \u201cRise of the Guardians\u201d drops 40%, it\u2019ll come in just behind with $6.5 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2\u201d was just behind \u201cRise of the Guardians\u201d last weekend, but between a 604 theater loss and a fast decline in general, this weekend it\u2019ll also give way to \u201cLincoln\u201d and \u201cLife of Pi.\u201d Should both \u201cLincoln\u201d and \u201cLife of Pi\u201d only drop 35%, they\u2019ll post $5.7 million and $5.4 million respectively while \u201cBreaking Dawn\u201d is more likely to drop 50% for a $4.5 million weekend five haul.<\/p>\n

With \u201cPlaying for Keeps\u201d looking to fade quickly, \u201cWreck-It Ralph\u201d should come in at #7 with a 40% loss and another $3 million. Even though \u201cRed Dawn\u201d did manage to level off, a 504-theater decline will keep it from climbing over \u201cPlaying for Keeps\u201d while a loss of 608 theaters will stop it from slipping under \u201cFlight.\u201d With \u201cPlaying for Keeps\u201d likely on its way to a $3 million second weekend out, it\u2019ll come in at #8 while both \u201cRed Dawn\u201d and \u201cFlight\u201d will file in right behind with $2 million each.<\/p>\n
