With a slew of end-of-the-year lists floating around the web, this final Movie News Cheat Sheet<\/B> of 2012 is dedicated to highlighting the best of the best in ten different categories via my own opinions as well as thoughts from other outlets in the movie news community. Ready for the best in quotes, stars, box office numbers and more? It\u2019s all coming your way in the final Cheat Sheet<\/B> of the year.<\/p>\n

1. Most Pirated:<\/FONT><\/B> You\u2019d think the most pirated movies of the year would line up with the biggest earners. Sure, bootlegging snags some cash from a film\u2019s box office total, but more people catching something in theaters has to mean more feeling compelled to steal it, right? Yes and no. The top two earners of the year, \u201cThe Avengers\u201d and \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises,\u201d both cracked the top ten most downloaded movies on BitTorrent, but both were also surpassed by \u201cProject X,\u201d which earned the title of the most pirated film of 2012. Also featured on the list are 2011 entries \u201cSherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,\u201d \u201cThe Girl With the Dragon Tattoo\u201d and \u201cThe Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn \u2013 Part 1.\u201d Click here to check out the complete chart over at Torrent Freak<\/a>.<\/p>\n

2. Most Memorable Quotes:<\/FONT><\/B> There\u2019s a big difference between most memorable and most frequent. While many outlets give credit to the used and abused \u201cThe \u2018D\u2019 is silent\u201d from \u201cDjango Unchained\u201d and Matthew McConaughey\u2019s epic \u201cMagic Mike\u201d introduction, I favor the lesser known gems that we\u2019re bound to repeat through the New Year. While any of Hana Mae Lee\u2019s lines of dialogue in \u201cPitch Perfect\u201d would fit the bill, M Live<\/a> goes with this lovely recollection, \u201cI ate my twin in the womb.\u201d The National Post<\/a> pokes fun at \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises\u201d honoring Bane\u2019s \u201cunintelligible mumbles\u201d while Vulture<\/a> offers up a laugh asking Jeremy Renner\u2019s favorite question in \u201cThe Bourne Legacy,\u201d \u201cWhere are the chems?\u201d Personally, I\u2019ve got to give this one to little Hushpuppy from \u201cBeasts of the Southern Wild.\u201d You\u2019ve got to be pretty creative to come up with \u201cI hope you die! And after you die, I’ll go to your grave and eat birthday cake all by myself!” in the heat of an argument.<\/p>\n

3. Biggest Star:<\/FONT><\/B> The final IMDB STARmeter<\/a> rankings are in and it\u2019s basically what you\u2019d expect from a year filled with Batman, Katniss and Bella Swan. Kristen Stewart puts \u201cThe Twilight Saga\u201d on the board, coming in at #10 while \u201cThe Hunger Games\u201d snags two spots, #9 for Josh Hutcherson and #2 for Jennifer Lawrence. Emma Stone gets \u201cThe Amazing Spider-Man\u201d some love, taking the #8 position and Johnny Depp takes #7, likely thanks to buzz from \u201cDark Shadows\u201d and the upcoming \u201cLone Ranger.\u201d The accolades continue to pour in for People Magazine\u2019s Sexiest Man Alive, Channing Tatum, the \u201cMagic Mike\u201d star taking #6 while Chris Hemsworth, who\u2019s pretty damn sexy himself, takes #3. The big winner on IMDB\u2019s list this year is \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises.\u201d Not only did the franchise finale earn over $440 million at the domestic box office, but the 5th, 4th and 1st spots on the 2012 IMDB STARmeter for Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy, respectively.<\/p>\n

4. Most Overrated:<\/FONT><\/B> If you\u2019ve checked out my best and worst films of the year<\/a>, you can probably guess my two most overrated movies of the year \u2013 \u201cAnna Karenina\u201d and \u201cCloud Atlas,\u201d hands down. Over at Movies.com<\/a>, David Ehrlich basically takes everyone\u2019s favorite films of the year and trashes them, but as eager as I am to defend \u201cThe Hunger Games,\u201d \u201cSilver Linings Playbook,\u201d and \u201cBeasts of the Southern Wild,\u201d I\u2019ve got to admit, he makes some good points. \u201cBeasts of the Southern Wild\u201d isn\u2019t getting much love over at The Playlist<\/a> either, the outlet marking it overrated right alongside \u201cSkyfall,\u201d \u201cArgo\u201d and \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises.\u201d \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises\u201d takes another hit from Scott Mendelson at The Huffington Post as does \u201cDredd,\u201d \u201cDjango Unchained,\u201d and \u201cBrave.\u201d<\/p>\n

5. Best Scene:<\/FONT><\/B> A sucker for some blood and guts, I\u2019m all for the \u201cCabin in the Woods\u201d elevator massacre and \u201cThe Hunger Games\u201d cornucopia brawl, but Total Film<\/a> gives Best Movie Scene honors to Joaquin Phoenix\u2019s prison temper tantrum in \u201cThe Master\u201d and Bane\u2019s mid-flight scuffle in \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises.\u201d Speaking of plane problems, The Playlist<\/a> gives \u201cThe Grey\u201d a thumbs up for the crash sequence and to \u201cChronicle\u201d for when the superpowered trio goes flying \u2013 sans plane. Flavorwire<\/a> goes for Anne Hathaway\u2019s rendition of \u201cI Dreamed a Dream\u201d in \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d and the tsunami hit in \u201cThe Impossible\u201d while AV Club<\/a> opts for the less likely choices \u2013deep space parachuting in \u201cLockout\u201d and Britt Robertson and Dylan O\u2019Brien\u2019s first time in \u201cThe First Time.\u201d<\/p>\n

6. Best Film You Likely Missed:<\/FONT><\/B> Now that we\u2019ve all gotten the chance to see the biggest releases of 2012, how about some of the limited ones that flew under the radar? The Playlist<\/a> recommends Andrea Arnold\u2019s adaptation of \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d and Craig Zobel\u2019s \u201cCompliance\u201d based on the true story of a prank caller pretending to be a detective who convinced restaurant and grocery store owners to strip search female employees. The Huffington Post<\/a> picks a winner with the hockey comedy \u201cGoon\u201d while Total Film<\/a> recommends the fire-powered romp \u201cGod Bless America\u201d and Ti West\u2019s latest creeper, \u201cThe Innkeepers.\u201d Cinema Blend<\/a> gives some much deserved attention to \u201cHello, I Must Be Going\u201d and NOLA.com<\/a> does the same for the charming time travel comedy \u201cSafety Not Guaranteed.\u201d As for me, I\u2019m sticking with my preference for the most outrageous violence the horror genre has to offer and going with the prom-time torture film \u201cThe Loved Ones.\u201d <\/p>\n

7. Best Unintentional Laugh:<\/FONT><\/B> An unconventional category, but one that deserves some attention courtesy of a certain big screen unintentional laugh nailed by The Playlist<\/a> that really is the epitome of the concept. Even as someone who dubs \u201cThe Hunger Games\u201d the third best film of the year, still tears up when poor Prim is reaped and cringes when Cato inflicts a certain quick snap of the neck, the sight of Peeta painted into that rock always takes me out of the moment and kicks off a serious case of the giggles.<\/p>\n

8. Best Poster:<\/FONT><\/B> I bestowed best poster honors upon \u201cThe American Scream\u201d over at Movies.com<\/a> while Collider<\/a> gave the title to \u201cBeasts of the Southern Wild.\u201d EW.com<\/a> showed off prints for \u201cHitchcock,\u201d \u201cSavages,\u201d and \u201cSinister\u201d in their best poster gallery and over at Screen Rant<\/a>, \u201cThe Amazing Spider-Man,\u201d \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises\u201d and \u201cParaNorman\u201d got top spots. Empire<\/a> put \u201cDredd\u201d and \u201cDjango Unchained\u201d in the mix while First Showing<\/a> tossed in a wild card, honor the \u201c21 Jump Street\u201d design.<\/p>\n

9. Best Trailer:<\/FONT><\/B> Slash Film<\/a> puts the trailers for \u201cThe Avengers\u201d and \u201cZero Dark Thirty\u201d amongst the best, but gives top honors to \u201cPrometheus,\u201d highlighting the piece\u2019s unforgettable sound design. \u201cPrometheus\u201d makes the cut over at Collider<\/a>, too, but only manages to secure the 8th spot whereas \u201cThe Avengers\u201d climbs to #1, taking top trailer honors. Over at Screen Crush<\/a> the staff looks ahead, putting \u201cEvil Dead,\u201d \u201cOz: The Great and Powerful\u201d and \u201cWorld War Z\u201d amongst the best but, so far, it looks like \u201cIron Man 3\u201d is the fan favorite in their reader poll. While it\u2019s not necessarily a trailer per se, I\u2019ve got to give some love to that mesmerizing \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables\u201d live singing featurette<\/a> that played before every single showing at Regal theaters \u2013 then again I\u2019d be very happy never to see it again. <\/p>\n

10. Biggest Moneymaker:<\/FONT><\/B> 2012 was the year of \u201cThe Avengers,\u201d the Marvel superhero mash-up following up its record-breaking opening and theatrical run with a total of $623 million at the domestic box office. Per usual, the latest installment of Christopher Nolan\u2019s Batman franchise opened big, \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises\u201d kicking things off with a massive $160.9 million opening and going on to take a total of $448 million. Turns out all the \u201cHunger Games\u201d hype paid off big time for Lionsgate. The studio will have a bright future should the series\u2019 next installments come close to the first film\u2019s $408 million domestic run. Sony is sitting pretty as well thanks to James Bond. After seven full weeks in theaters, \u201cSkyfall\u201d already has $289.6 million in the bank. \u201cThe Twilight Saga\u201d is on its way out, but isn\u2019t going anywhere before taking in another truckload of cash first. The series\u2019 final installment is the third highest earner so far, but with over 1,000 theaters still in play, it will likely trump \u201cNew Moon\u2019s\u201d $289.6 million soon.
