\u201cJack the Giant Slayer\u201d opened at #1, but failed to justify its monumental budget; will \u201cOz The Great and Powerful\u201d meet the same fate? Absolutely not. This is the same weekend back in 2010 that \u201cAlice in Wonderland\u201d opened with an incredible $116 million, but it\u2019s also the same weekend \u201cJohn Carter\u201d took just $30 million in 2012. While \u201cOz\u201d doesn\u2019t have a chance at matching \u201cAlice,\u201d it could find middle ground between the two, which would give it a rock solid $80 million to start. Unfortunately for our second newcomer, \u201cDead Man Down,\u201d it\u2019s only going to take the smallest fraction of that amount, perhaps just $7 million.<\/p>\n

Then again, $7 million might not be all that bad this weekend. In fact, the only other film that\u2019s got any shot at overearning it other than \u201cOz,\u201d is \u201cJack the Giant Slayer.\u201d Should \u201cJack\u201d take a 50% hit going up against \u201cOz,\u201d it\u2019ll come in with another $14 million, which would put it at #2 and \u201cDead Man Down\u201d at #3. With zero comedy competition entering the race, \u201cIdentity Thief\u201d should continue to merely inch its way down, perhaps losing just 30% again for another $6.5 million.<\/p>\n

Even with no youth-friendly fare or horror films arriving, both \u201c21 and Over\u201d and \u201cThe Last Exorcism Part II\u201d could fall to \u201cSnitch\u201d and possibly more. Should \u201c21 and Over\u201d drop 50% and \u201cLast Exorcism\u201d take one of those wicked 60% weekend one to two genre hits, \u201cSnitch\u201d would top both with $4.2 million while \u201c21 and Over\u201d takes just less than that and \u201cLast Exorcism\u201d only posts $3 million. However, that still doesn\u2019t even guarantee these three the 5th, 6th and 7th spots. With \u201cSilver Linings Playbook\u201d seeing nearly no weekend 15 to 16 loss, there\u2019s a good shot it might only drop 10% this time around, which would give it another $5.1 million, making #5 an easy grab.<\/p>\n

Even worse for \u201cLast Exorcism,\u201d \u201cEscape From Planet Earth\u201d will out earn it, too. The animated alien movie has turned out to be quite the box office surprise, never losing more than 38% and there\u2019s no reason to think it\u2019ll start now. If it drops 38% again, it\u2019ll take $4 million and that\u2019ll be enough for #8, pushing \u201cLast Exorcism\u201d to #9. But even then, \u201cLast Exorcism\u201d might have a fight for #9, too. Even if \u201cSafe Haven\u201d drops 50%, it\u2019ll still take $3 million, putting it right in contention with \u201cLast Exorcism\u201d for #9 and, between the two, \u201cSafe Haven\u201d is more likely to come out on top.<\/p>\n
