The box office results for the weekend of April 19th – 21st shows Tom Cruise regaining his powers and becoming the champ once again. Oblivion<\/em> capitalized on being the lone wide-release and took advantage of a movie-going public anxious for an early summer blockbuster. Here are the studio estimates:<\/p>\n

1. Oblivion ($38.1 million)<\/p>\n

2. 42 ($18 million)<\/p>\n

3. The Croods ($9.5 million)<\/p>\n

4. Scary Movie 5 ($6.2 million)<\/p>\n

5. G.I. Joe: Retaliation ($5.7 million)<\/p>\n

6. The Place Beyond the Pines ($4.7 million)<\/p>\n

7. Olympus Has Fallen ($4.5 million)<\/p>\n

8. Evil Dead ($4.1 million)<\/p>\n

9. Jurassic Park 3D ($4 million)<\/p>\n

10. Oz the Great and Powerful ($3 million)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Analysis<\/p>\n

While Oblivion<\/strong><\/em> had a solid opening weekend, the next two weeks are going reveal whether it can earn profits off the $120 million production budget. With Iron Man 3<\/em> looming on the horizon, the domestic success may be short-lived, especially when factoring in the mediocre reviews from both the lovely critics and audiences. The good news for Universal Pictures is that Tom Cruise is still quite the attraction in the overseas markets.<\/p>\n

Oz the Great and Powerful<\/strong><\/em> currently holds the longest streak in the top ten with 7 weeks. It’s domestic gross has risen to $223.7 million.<\/p>\n

42<\/strong><\/em> could be in for a smooth run thanks to just a 35% dip from its opening weekend. The $40 million production for the dramatic sports biopic has snagged $54 million domestically. And speaking of hanging around, the 3D animated The Croods<\/strong><\/em> is holdings its own and sits just under $155 million after 5 weeks in release.<\/p>\n

This Friday the tag-team of Dwayne Johnson and Mark Wahlberg will try to out-muscle Cruise from the top spot with Pain and Gain<\/em>. Also going wide is the romantic-comedy, The Big Wedding<\/em>. Reviews will be right here my fellow Shockers!<\/p>\n
