Here we go again. Another wannabe summer tentpole is about to make its way into theaters, but the question is, will \u201cIron Man 3\u201d move over enough to give \u201cThe Great Gatsby\u201d a significant share of the profits? Probably not. If \u201cIron Man 3\u201d keeps in line with \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises,\u201d it\u2019s in for a 60% hit, but thanks to such an enormous opening, that\u2019ll still leave it with $70 million and that\u2019ll be more than enough to trump \u201cGatsby\u201d and stay at #1. As for \u201cGatsby,\u201d between the tough competition and lackluster reviews, it\u2019ll be lucky to match the \u201cLes Miserables\u201d $27 million opening.<\/p>\n

Also new to theaters this weekend is yet another Tyler Perry production, \u201cPeeples.\u201d There\u2019s really no reason to think this one won\u2019t keep right in line with the large majority of recent Tyler Perry releases and if that\u2019s the case, it\u2019s looking at a solid $17 million start ahead of its impending devastatingly swift decline.<\/p>\n

After a particularly tough weekend one to two hit, there\u2019s just not all that far for \u201cPain and Gain\u201d to fall anymore. Should it bring that 62.9% loss down to 45%, it\u2019ll come in with just over $4 million and that\u2019ll be just enough to keep \u201c42\u201d from stealing the #4 spot. \u201c42\u2019s\u201d percent change has been creeping up steadily ever since it opened and if that holds true in weekend five, it\u2019s looking at a 45% hit for another $3.3 million.<\/p>\n

Considering \u201cOblivion\u201d is on a landslide decline, \u201cThe Croods\u201d will almost definitely surpass it on the charts this weekend and \u201cThe Big Wedding\u201d even has a decent shot at getting pretty close, too. Should \u201cOblivion\u201d see its weekend two profits slashed in half, it\u2019ll be left with $2.5 million. Considering \u201cThe Croods\u201d has yet to lose more than 38.8% in a single weekend, why would it start now? Even if it drops that amount moving into weekend eight, it\u2019ll still end up with just over $2.5 million, earning the 6th spot over \u201cOblivion.\u201d As for \u201cThe Big Wedding,\u201d folks with no interest in the two and a half hour \u201cGatsby\u201d epic could head in its direction instead, lessening its weekend two to three loss of 48.9% to 40%, leaving it with another $2.3 million.<\/p>\n

Fortunately for \u201cThe Big Wedding,\u201d it had enough of a lead on \u201cMud\u201d last weekend that even with an additional 277 theaters, \u201cMud\u201d won\u2019t manage to surpass it. However, that\u2019s not to say \u201cMud\u201d isn\u2019t in for yet another strong weekend. Should its $3,751 per theater average come down to $2,500, it\u2019ll still take $2.1 million, losing an incredibly minimal amount yet again.<\/p>\n

That leaves one spot left on the top ten and it\u2019ll certainly go to \u201cOz the Great and Powerful.\u201d With a sizable lead on \u201cScary Movie 5,\u201d the 10th position should be an easy win for \u201cOz,\u201d especially after its profits actually increased from weekend eight to nine. Should \u201cOz\u201d drop 25% this time around, it\u2019ll earn another $1.5 million, a solid show for a 10th weekend in theaters.<\/p>\n
