You know what\u2019s great about this week\u2019s Movie News Cheat Sheet<\/B>? It isn\u2019t a list of movie news talking points relegated to school or work. You can talk film all you want at a party, BBQ, or whatever you have planned because it\u2019s a three-day weekend!<\/p>\n

In between beers and hamburgers you can show off how you\u2019re in the know by speculating on who might replace Tom Cruise in \u201cThe Man from U.NC.L.E.\u201d or perhaps how and if Evan Peters\u2019 \u201cX-Men: Days of Future Past\u201d character will fit into \u201cThe Avengers 2.\u201d There\u2019s also loads of news out of the Cannes Film Festival with the Palme d\u2019Or winner, \u201cBlue is the Warmest Color,\u201d and the Grand Prix recipient, \u201cInside Llewyn Davis,\u201d both solidifying themselves as must-sees. <\/p>\n

1. Tom Cruise Out of \u201cThe Man from U.N.C.L.E.:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> We\u2019ve got yet another setback for Warner Bros\u2019 \u201cThe Man from U.N.C.L.E.\u201d Originally the TV to film adaptation about two United Network Command for Law Enforcement agents taking on the evil forces of Thrush was due to star George Clooney with Steven Soderbergh behind the lens, but when Clooney departed for back and neck surgery, Soderbergh followed soon thereafter. The studio kept the bar high by replacing that duo with Tom Cruise and Guy Ritchie but now, according to Deadline<\/a>, Cruise is backing out too so he can dedicate his time to producing and starring in \u201cMission: Impossible 5.\u201d Ritchie is still committed and planning for a fall start, so now Warner Bros is forging forward to find Armie Hammer a new co-star.<\/p>\n

2. Evan Peters is Quicksilver:<\/FONT><\/B> No more rumor mill. It\u2019s official. Evan Peters is Quicksilver. Bryan Singer broke the news on Twitter<\/a>, writing, \u201cThrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.” Now the question is, where does that leave Scarlet Witch? After Joss Whedon dubbed Saoirse Ronan the \u201cprototype\u201d for the character, Ronan herself told The Mary Sue<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019d love to be in it.\u201d But now, of course, these are two different movies we\u2019re talking about here, begging the next question, how are these two characters going to cross over from \u201cX-Men: Days of Future Past\u201d to \u201cThe Avengers 2?\u201d Admittedly I know little to nothing about the source material and the rules of the mythology, so I defer to Screen Rant<\/a>, which poses three possibilities of which the third is easily the most appeal \u2013 \u201cBeginning with \u2018X-Men: Days of Future Past,\u2019 the Scarlet Witch\/Quicksilver introduced in Singer\u2019s film are the same pair going to show up in \u2018The Avengers 2,\u2019 meaning Evan Peters may have just been cast in The Avengers 2 as well.\u201d Considering Whedon is still writing \u201cThe Avengers 2,\u201d it\u2019ll likely be quite some time until we get a concrete answer, but now that Peters is 100% for \u201cDays of Future Past,\u201d a Scarlet Witch casting announcement is bound to crop up for that one soon. From there it\u2019ll be a waiting game to see if Whedon brings the same actors over for his movie.<\/p>\n

3. \u201cTravis McGee\u201d Gets a Writer:<\/FONT><\/B> Is \u201cTravis McGee\u201d finally moving forward? Considering the adaptation of \u201cThe Deep Blue Good-by\u201d has been floating around since 2008, I\u2019ll believe it when the thing finally goes into production. However, according to THR<\/a>, the project did take a step forward by recruiting author Dennis Lehane to pen the script. \u201cDeep Blue Good-by\u201d is the first of a 21-book series about Travis McGee, a \u201csalvage consultant\u201d who recovers money or property wrongfully taken from the rightful owner and makes a living by keeping half the value for himself. After all these years, Leonardo DiCaprio is still attached to star and produce via Appian Way, making this his fourth collaboration with Lehane.<\/p>\n

4. \u201cThe School of Good and Evil\u201d Movie in the Works:<\/FONT><\/B> Considering producer Joe Roth has been doing very well for himself with films like \u201cAlice in Wonderland,\u201d \u201cSnow White and the Huntsman,\u201d and \u201cOz the Great and Powerful,\u201d it\u2019s no wonder he\u2019s moving on to the adaptation of \u201cThe School for Good and Evil\u201d next. The Soman Chainani novel features a school that trains students to become the good and evil characters in fairytales. Sophie and Agatha are best friends just starting their studies, but both are positive of their fate \u2013 Sophie will end up in the School for Good while Agatha is prime for the School of Evil. However, when Sophie winds up stuck with classes like Death Curses and Henchmen Training and Agatha must take Princess Etiquette and Animal Communication, the the official synopses asks, \u201cBut what if the mistake is actually the first clue to discovering who Sophie and Agatha really are \u2026?\u201d According to Deadline<\/a>, Universal forked over seven figures for this baby, but during a time when moviegoers are drooling over YA book-to-film adaptations with female protagonists, it could result in significant returns, especially because this is only the first book of a planned trilogy.<\/p>\n

5. \u201cTimecop\u201d Reboot on the Way:<\/FONT><\/B> The Timecops are coming back! Or perhaps it\u2019s traveling forward? According to Heat Vision<\/a>, Universal has a remake of the 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme starrer \u201cTimecop\u201d in development. In that original film, time travel exists in 2004 and the Time Enforcement Commission (TEC) is created to stop people from illegally using the technology. The outlet dubs Universals\u2019 \u201cTimecop\u201d a \u201creboot\u201d and \u201cre-imagining,\u201d and notes that the studio is currently on the hunt for a writer.<\/p>\n

6. Fox Takes Zac Efron-Starrer \u201cNarc:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> As reported by Deadline<\/a>, Fox just snagged the life rights for \u201cNarc.\u201d The film is based on the true story of an All-American college student who become a police informant. Zac Efron is on board to play that student, a Frat president and lacrosse team captain who gets caught getting the goods for a party. He\u2019s permitted to carry on his everyday life on campus under one condition; he become a narc and helps the police catch the criminals responsible. \u201cThe Maze Runner\u201d scribe, Grant Myers, is locked to pen the script while Efron\u2019s manager and producing partner, Jason Barrett, is set to executive produce alongside Doug Banker.<\/p>\n

7. Release Date Update:<\/FONT><\/B> Bust out your calendar. There\u2019s a number of release date changes and updates worth noting. Jason Reitman\u2019s \u201cLabor Day\u201d has officially been slated for a Christmas Day release while Spike Jonze\u2019s \u201cHer\u201d will hit theaters the month before, on November 20, 2013. \u201cThe Mortal Instruments: City of Bones\u201d will get a jump on its competition, as Sony bumped it up to a Wednesday, August 21st release instead of its original Friday, August 23rd drop date. The Vince Vaughn starrer \u201cDelivery Man\u201d shuffled around a bit, too, moving from October 4th back to November 22nd where it\u2019ll go up against \u201cThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire.\u201d While \u201cCatching Fire\u201d is expected to be just as big of a box office hog as the first \u201cHunger Games\u201d film, \u201cDelivery Man\u201d could be better off going up against one monstrous new release rather than three films of a smaller scale. \u201cOld Boy,\u201d on the other hand, made a release day move that could be a bit of a tossup. It ditched \u201cCaptain Phillips\u201d and \u201cHaunts\u201d on October 11th to face \u201cParanormal Activity 5\u201d on October 25th. Halloween weekend is never really a big one at the box office, save for the \u201cParanormal Activity\u201d franchise, so the \u201cOldboy\u201d draw at the time of the month is questionable. And lastly, way down the line, we\u2019ll have the big screen adaptation of \u201cAssassin\u2019s Creed\u201d arriving in theaters on May 22, 2015. (via Box Office Mojo<\/a>)<\/p>\n

8. Cannes 2013:<\/FONT><\/B> And that\u2019s a wrap on Cannes 2013. The big winner is \u201cBlue is the Warmest Color,\u201d which was awarded the Palme d\u2019Or while the Coen Brothers took the Grand Prix for \u201cInside Llewyn Davis.\u201d Harvey Weinstein walked away with his hands full<\/a>, The Weinstein Company snatching up the Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska-starred, \u201cCarol,\u201d \u201cThe Young and Prodigious Spivet\u201d featuring Helena Bonham Carter, and Todd Haynes\u2019 \u201cFar From Heaven,\u201d which is due to shoot in the fall. TWC joined forces with Relativity to take the US rights to \u201cJane Got A Gun<\/a>\u201d while the Radius-TWC branch of Weinstein\u2019s company picked up the FIPRESCI Prize winner \u201cBlue Ruin\u201d and Keanu Reeves\u2019 directorial debut \u201cMan of Tai Chi.\u201d Cannes\u2019 sole major studio film in competition, Alexander Payne\u2019s \u201cNebraska,\u201d made off with some lukewarm reviews, The Guardian<\/a> giving it four out of five stars, but IndieWire<\/a> grading it a B- and calling it \u201caffably unexceptional.\u201d Meanwhile, Nicolas Winding Refn\u2019s \u201cOnly God Forgives\u201d got flak for being too violent. The Guardian<\/a> called it \u201cbloated, corpulent and borderline repulsive,\u201d but then went on to say, \u201cthere\u2019s something magnificent about it just the same.\u201d Screen Daily<\/a> pointed out, \u201cFor many, it will be hard to look beyond the explicit violence and rather thinly drawn plot and characters,\u201d but again, also highlighted its assets noting that it\u2019s also \u201can immersive and brutally intriguing film.\u201d Oh, and while everyone was indulging in highly anticipated screenings and lavish parties, there were two jewelry heists<\/a>, one of which involved $1.4 million in Chopard jewelry and the other a necklace worth $2.6 million.<\/p>\n

9. Trailers: \u201cWe\u2019re the Millers,\u201d \u201cMetallica Through the Never,\u201d \u201cThe Act of Killing:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> Jennifer Aniston doesn\u2019t have very many commercial comedies to her name worth showing off, but \u201cWe\u2019re the Millers<\/a>\u201d actually looks like it could be a great deal of fun. Not only are a handful of the jokes in the film\u2019s new trailer quite amusing, but the charm of the family dynamic suggests the film might have some heart, too. Unless you\u2019re familiar with \u201cMetallica Through the Never<\/a>,\u201d the film\u2019s first trailer will likely be more confusing than appealing as it\u2019s tough to tell whether the thing is selling a narrative or a straight 3D concert movie, but, then again, it\u2019s Metallica and Dane DeHaan; the pairing itself is enough to raise intrigue. Last up is one that\u2019s wildly moving, but it\u2019s also so disturbing it might make you think twice before jumping into the full feature. \u201cThe Act of Killing<\/a>\u201d is a documentary from Joshua Oppenheimer that shows what happens when death squad leaders are tasked with recreating their mass murders in the form of their favorite American movies. The film\u2019s iTunes Trailer page calls it \u201can unsettling journey deep into the imaginations of mass murderers and the shockingly banal regime of corruption and impunity they inhabit,\u201d but that\u2019s not just a mere selling point. After watching the trailer, you\u2019ll already accept it as fact.<\/p>\n

10. Box Office:<\/FONT><\/B> As expected, \u201cFast & Furious 6\u201d absolutely demolished the box office. Not only did the film pull in a total of $98.5 million, but it did so on a stellar $26,935 per theater average. Even with \u201cFast & Furious\u201d taking such a massive chunk of the pie, \u201cThe Hangover Part III\u201d still managed to pull in $42.4 million. It\u2019s not a particularly strong start considering the franchise\u2019s track record, but at least it\u2019ll cover that $103 million production budget shorty. The 3rd spot went to \u201cStar Trek into Darkness,\u201d which held on fairly strong, dropping just 45.8% and taking another $38 million to the bank. It\u2019s no \u201cThe Croods,\u201d but \u201cEpic\u201d still managed to accumulate $34.2 million for weekend one. With no new animated competition entering the race until \u201cMonsters University\u201d on June 21st, hopefully it\u2019ll get the chance to stretch its legs a bit. \u201cIron Man 3\u201d rounds out the top five, dropping 45.7% from weekend three to four, which gives it another $19.4 million and brings its domestic total to just over $367 million.
