With two new wide releases arriving and \u201cMan of Steel\u201d poised to claim a nice chunk of cash yet again, all three might wind up stepping on each other\u2019s toes a bit, leaving the weekend without a runaway winner. \u201cMan of Steel\u201d made a killing its first weekend out, but not enough to guarantee a significant percent change this time around. If it manages to hold on to 50% of its opening profits, it\u2019ll have a strong $58 million second weekend out, but that won\u2019t be good enough to hold on to that top spot.<\/p>\n

Between \u201cMonsters University\u201d and \u201cWorld War Z,\u201d \u201cMonsters University\u201d will come out on top for two reasons \u2013 it\u2019s a sequel and has a wide appeal. It won\u2019t open as big as \u201cToy Story 3,\u201d but it should be able to match or surpass \u201cBrave\u201d with about $70 million to take the top spot. Even though Brad Pitt\u2019s been very busy giving \u201cWorld War Z\u201d a serious push, this one will be lucky to match \u201cPrometheus,\u201d likely only taking $50 million its first weekend out.<\/p>\n

Even with no new comedy competition entering the race, \u201cThis Is The End\u201d could still take a moderate hit, something along the lines of \u201cGet Him to the Greek,\u201d forcing it to wave goodbye to 45% of its opening profits and leaving it $11 million this time around. \u201cNow You See Me\u201d has enjoyed a moderate decline thus far and there\u2019s no reason to think that\u2019ll change now. Should it lose 42% again, it\u2019ll post $6.5 million for weekend three.<\/p>\n

If you open big, the harsh decline is inevitable, but it looks as though \u201cFast & Furious 6\u201d might have leveled out. Should it find the middle ground between its weekend two to three and weekend three to four percent change, it\u2019ll dip about 47% and take another $5 million to the bank. As for \u201cThe Purge,\u201d should it continue on the same track as \u201cA Nightmare on Elm Street,\u201d it\u2019s heading towards a 50% slashing, which would leave it with about $4 million.<\/p>\n

Fortunately for \u201cThe Purge,\u201d \u201cThe Internship\u201d is also on a fast decline, so that $4 million should be just enough to hold on to the #7 spot. In fact, if \u201cThe Internship\u201d only manages to bring that 58.7% weekend one to two loss down to 50% for a $3.5 million second weekend out, \u201cEpic\u201d has a decent shot at surpassing it. You\u2019d think \u201cEpic\u201d would be in for a big hit with \u201cMonsters University\u201d arriving, but the \u201cMonsters University\u201d overflow could actually give \u201cEpic\u201d a nice boost. If \u201cEpic\u201d dips 45% from weekend four to five, it\u2019ll taking another $3.7 million to the bank and the 8th spot on the top ten. <\/p>\n

Thanks to a sizable gap between \u201cStar Trek Into Darkness\u201d and \u201cAfter Earth\u201d last weekend, \u201cStar Trek\u201d should have no trouble claiming that 10th spot this time around, even if it sees its profits cut in half for a $3 million haul.<\/p>\n
