Another weekend, another pair of wannabe summer blockbusters. We\u2019ve got \u201cWhite House Down\u201d and \u201cThe Heat\u201d due in 3,000+ theaters and while both are poised to take a solid chunk of cash, neither will earn enough to reach the upper tier of summer 2013 releases.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Heat\u201d is clearly trying to follow in \u201cTed\u2019s\u201d footsteps by taking the last weekend of June, but it\u2019ll likely only manage to post \u201cBad Teacher\u201d numbers, taking around $35 million for its first weekend out. As for \u201cWhite House Down,\u201d Roland Emmerich disaster movies have a tendency to earn $50 million or more in their opening weekend, but \u201cWhite House Down\u201d might feel the pressure from \u201cMonsters University,\u201d \u201cWorld War Z,\u201d and \u201cMan of Steel,\u201d giving Emmerich an opening on the lower end of the spectrum, around $45 million.<\/p>\n

With no new family-friendly fare hitting theaters, \u201cMonsters University\u201d will undoubtedly hold strong. Should it follow a similar path to \u201cDr. Seuss\u2019 The Lorax,\u201d it\u2019ll only dip 45% from weekend one to two, and take another $45 million to the bank, probably coming in just behind \u201cWhite House Down.\u201d \u201cWorld War Z,\u201d on the other hand, will feel the effect of \u201cWhite House Down,\u201d possibly slamming it with a 60% decline, which would leave it with just about $27 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cMan of Steel\u201d opened big, but took a particularly hefty weekend two hit, and that fast decline might not let up all that much in weekend three. Should that 64.6% drop be reduced to about 57%, \u201cMan of Steel\u201d will post $18 million for its third weekend out. Even with \u201cThe Heat\u201d invading its R-rated comedy territory, \u201cThis is the End\u201d has the 6th position on lock thanks to a strong lead on \u201cNow You See Me.\u201d Should it\u2019s weekend one to two percent change of 35.9% come up to about 42%, it\u2019ll take another $8 million to the bank. As for \u201cNow You See Me,\u201d should the trend continue, it\u2019ll keep its percent change nice and low, possibly only losing 35% for another $5 million.<\/p>\n

The final three spots could be a toss up considering they\u2019re within arm\u2019s reach of about six films. Both \u201cIron Man 3\u201d and \u201cThe Internship\u201d will be left with very few screens come the weekend, so we can cross those off. \u201cFast & Furious 6\u201d had enough of a lead on the pack last weekend, so odds are, it\u2019ll claim the 8th spot with about $3 million. That leaves us with \u201cStar Trek Into Darkness,\u201d \u201cThe Purge,\u201d and \u201cThe Bling Ring.\u201d With no new horror material entering the race, \u201cThe Purge\u201d should be able to hold on strong enough to claim #9 with another $2 million. So now the question is, will \u201cThe Bling Ring\u201d have the legs to trump \u201cStar Trek Into Darkness\u201d and sneak into the top ten. I\u2019m betting on it.<\/p>\n
