Due to the holiday, we\u2019re a little light on news this week, but the fact that Independence Day has come and gone also means something very big for the movie industry \u2013 San Diego Comic Con is right around the corner.<\/p>\n

SDCC 2013 is poised to be a big one with \u201cThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire,\u201d \u201cThor: The Dark World,\u201d \u201cCaptain America: The Winter Solider,\u201d and more all making their way into Hall H. And if waiting on line for hours to catch glimpses of your favorite stars and to see some brand new footage isn\u2019t your thing, you can visit the \u201cEnder\u2019s Game\u201d Exclusive Fan Experience outside the Hilton Gaslamp or catch a screening of \u201cDrew: The Man Behind the Poster\u201d at the Gaslamp 15.<\/p>\n

Ready for an overview of what\u2019s to come at SDCC, a \u201cJustice League\u201d update (or rather a non-update) from Christian Bale, the latest on \u201cThe Butler\u201d title dispute, and more? It\u2019s all coming at you in your weekly Movie News Cheat Sheet<\/B>.<\/p>\n

1. San Diego Comic Con Schedule is Here:<\/FONT><\/B> On Wednesday, July 17th Shockya.com returns to Comic Con! We\u2019ll be on the ground in San Diego to bring you the latest from the panels in Hall H, interview opportunities and loads more. Our schedule is still coming together, but over the past few days Comic Con has released their official programming schedule and there are quite a few events on our radar. Wednesday evening is all about pilot screenings. We\u2019re hoping to catch one if not all of the following \u2013 \u201cAlmost Human,\u201d \u201cThe Originals,\u201d \u201cTomorrow People,\u201d and \u201cThe 100.\u201d Things really start to pick up on Thursday with \u201cEnder\u2019s Game\u201d and \u201cDivergent\u201d rolling into Hall H. On Friday \u201cNikita\u201d is due to make its final appearance at SDCC after which \u201cCloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,\u201d \u201cThe Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,\u201d \u201cRobocop,\u201d and \u201cThe Amazing Spider-Man 2\u201d will all hit Hall H via the Sony and Screen Gems panel. And later that night, we\u2019re making it a priority to catch the \u201cOrphan Black\u201d SDCC debut with a chat with show stars Tatiana Maslany, Jordan Gavaris, and Dylan Bruce as well as co-creators Graeme Manson and John Fawcett. If you\u2019re hoping to squeeze your way into Hall H on Saturday, you better line up very<\/I> early because the day\u2019s line-up includes \u201cThe Hunger Games: Catching Fire\u201d and \u201cI, Frankenstein\u201d at the Lionsgate Panel, a presentation from 20th Century Fox, one from Warner Bros. with \u201cGodzilla,\u201d \u201cSeventh Son,\u201d \u201c300: Rise of an Empire,\u201d \u201cGravity,\u201d and \u201cThe LEGO Movie,\u201d and then, of course, a presentation from Marvel, too. It\u2019s bound to be a crazy five days of movie news, so keep an eye on Shockya to follow along as our coverage plans progress and then roll into the SDCC 2013 madness.<\/p>\n

2. No Christian Bale for \u201cJustice League:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> Rumors of a \u201cJustice League\u201d movie have still yet to come to fruition, but should it ever happen, Christian Bale will not be part of it. This really shouldn\u2019t come as a shock considering Bale has been very vocal about the fact that \u201cThe Dark Knight Rises\u201d would mark his last run as Batman, and a full year after the film hit theaters, he maintains that stance. Bale told EW<\/a>, \u201cWe were incredibly fortunate to get to make three. That\u2019s enough. Let\u2019s not get greedy.\u201d As for the \u201cJustice League\u201d movie specifically, he noted, \u201dI have no information, no knowledge about anything. I\u2019ve literally not had a conversation with a living soul. I understand that they may be making a \u2018Justice League\u2019 movie, that\u2019s it.\u201d Referring to the opportunity to play Batman, Bale also added, \u201cIt\u2019s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another. So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with.\u201d<\/p>\n

3. Injured Carpenter Suing Happy Madison Productions:<\/FONT><\/B> Looks like someone lost a lot more than time and $14.50 for \u201cThat\u2019s My Boy.\u201d As reported by THR<\/a>, Boston carpenter Richard Houpert was working with a table saw while building sets for the film and because the machine did not have proper safety components, his hand was \u201cdrawn into the saw\u201d resulting in the loss of several fingers. He\u2019s now suing Adam Sandler\u2019s Happy Madison Productions for gross negligence and is also going after Sony and Columbia, claiming the production companies had deliberately set aside money for set safety, but never put it to use. And that\u2019s not all. Houpert is also going after Black & Decker because their saw is \u201cdangerous and defective.\u201d<\/p>\n

4. \u201cThe Butler\u201d Title Dispute:<\/FONT><\/B> Has anyone out there seen Warner Bros\u2019 1916 silent short film \u201cThe Butler?\u201d Didn\u2019t think so. But regardless, according to Deadline<\/a>, Warner Bros. is still going after The Weinstein Company, insisting that they change the title of their August 16th release, the Forest Whitaker-starrer, \u201cThe Butler.\u201d The whole thing seems trivial considering few, if any, will confuse the two, but according to the most recent letter sent by Warner Bros. to TWC\u2019s counsel, David Boies, it might be as black and white as having broken the rules. The letter notes that as a Title Registration Bureau subscriber, Warner Bros. can designate up to 500 titles as \u201cPermanent Original Releases\u201d and as of May 2010, one of them is \u201cThe Butler.\u201d The only way for another company to get around that restriction is by receiving a waiver from the subscriber that laid claim to the title. Clearly Warner Bros. did not grant TWC permission. Again, this whole issue seems trifling and like one big waste of time, energy, and money, begging the question, why won\u2019t Lee Daniels and TWC just let up and change the title? A title doesn\u2019t make a movie. But, then again, even though it appears Warner Bros. is in the right from a legal standpoint, it\u2019s also hard not to wonder why Warner Bros. won\u2019t just give into Daniels\u2019 passionate plea. It\u2019s just two words!<\/p>\n

5. Steve Spielberg Remaking \u201cThe Grapes of Wrath:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> John Ford\u2019s adaptation of John Steinbeck\u2019s \u201cThe Grapes of Wrath\u201d snagged two Academy Awards in 1941, but apparently Steven Spielberg thinks he can do better. As reported by Deadline<\/a>, DreamWorks is currently in talks with Steinbeck\u2019s estate to make another movie. Apparently Spielberg \u201cswooped in to take it off the table over other bidders,\u201d which included Robert Redford who had plans to turn the book into an FX miniseries. Even though Spielberg\u2019s plea won out, it\u2019s only for the domestic rights to the original film. Fox still retains the foreign rights, which would give Fox the opportunity to be part of the production. For those of you who managed to bypass the book in high school, \u201cThe Grapes of Wrath\u201d focuses on the Joads, a family that falls victim to a drought in Oklahoma and opts to leave their land behind in hopes of making a better life for themselves in California.<\/p>\n

6. Halloween Horror Nights Gets a Real \u201cCabin in the Woods:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> Ever wonder how you\u2019d fare in Joss Whedon\u2019s \u201cCabin the Woods?\u201d You\u2019ll get your chance to find out at Universal Orlando\u2019s Halloween Horror Nights 23. This year, the event will give attendees the opportunity to evade the clutches of beasts and creatures from the film like the Dollfaces, Sugarplum Fairy, Doctors, Hell Lord, and more at the cabin, and then make their way into the secret facility built to orchestrate their deaths. The event runs on select nights from September 20th to November 2nd and will include even more \u201chighly-themed, disturbingly-real haunted houses,\u201d the details of which should arrive soon. If you\u2019re interested in a good scare in Orlando, one general admission ticket will run you $91.99 or you could go big and get the Gory Getaway for $299 per person. This includes a three-night stay at a Universal partner hotel, two-day base ticket to the theme parks, one-night admission to Halloween Horror Nights, and more. 7. James Cameron Talks \u201cAvatar,\u201d \u201cBattle Angel\u201d & 3D at TagDF:<\/FONT><\/B> We\u2019ve still got a long way to go before another James Cameron-directed narrative feature hits theaters, but he did emerge from his New Zealand estate to have a chat with Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n at Mexico City\u2019s technology forum, TagDF, where he offered updates on a number of upcoming projects. For \u201cAvatar 2,\u201d Cameron announced plans to go a step beyond the original not by trying to create new technology, but rather by \u201cexpanding story and characters.\u201d Even though \u201cAvatar 2\u201d and \u201cAvatar 3\u201d will occupy him for years to come, Cameron still has plans to make that \u201cBattle Angel\u201d adaption, planning to begin development in 2017. Cameron also touched on the topic of 3D, something he clearly has no problem with himself, but he does take issue with 3D conversion. \u201cOne thing is shooting in 3D and another is to convert to 3D.\u201d He added that he\u2019s finding it\u2019s the \u201cmoney-hungry studios\u201d and not the directors who maintain control over the technology and expressed a particular displeasure for studios that push the technology on directors \u201cwho are not comfortable or do not like 3D.\u201d (via The Film Stage<\/a> & La Verdad<\/a>)<\/p>\n

8. Meet the Man Behind the Posters:<\/FONT><\/B> This isn\u2019t \u201cnews\u201d per se, but if you\u2019ve got even the slightest appreciation for aesthetic and effective movie posters, you need to meet Drew Struzan who\u2019s responsible for unforgettable classics like the posters for \u201cThe Thing,\u201d \u201cStar Wars,\u201d \u201cBack to the Future,\u201d \u201cRisky Business,\u201d \u201cThe Goonies,\u201d \u201cHarry Potter and the Sorcerer\u2019s Stone,\u201d and loads more. According to Deadline<\/a>, a Struzan documentary, \u201cDrew: The Man Behind the Poster\u201d will premiere at SDCC on Friday, July 19th at the Gaslamp 15 and then get a limited theatrical release on August 16th after which it\u2019ll hit VOD in the fall. 9. Trailers: \u201cThe Boxtrolls,\u201d \u201cLovelace,\u201d \u201cDelivery Man:\u201d<\/FONT><\/B> The \u201cDespicable Me\u201d minions might have some eerily adorable creatures to contend with come September 26, 2014. The first teaser for Laika\u2019s \u201cParaNorman\u201d follow-up, \u201cThe Boxtrolls<\/a>,\u201d is here and it\u2019s undeniably heartwarming. In more adult territory, we\u2019ve got the new trailer for Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman\u2019s Linda Lovelace biography, \u201cLovelace<\/a>.\u201d The promo doesn\u2019t necessarily suggest the film is a must-see, but it does hint that Amanda Seyfried\u2019s performance alone might make this one worth catching. Last up is the latest Vince Vaughn comedy, \u201cDelivery Man<\/a>.\u201d Don\u2019t let the aftereffects of \u201cThe Internship\u201d turn you off; \u201cDelivery Man\u201d actually looks to have more heart than most, putting Vaughn\u2019s character in an extraordinary yet somewhat grounded scenario.<\/p>\n

10. Box Office:<\/FONT><\/B> Gru has achieved world domination! \u201cDespicable Me 2\u201d didn\u2019t just trump the first film\u2019s $56.4 million opening; it demolished it. And not only did \u201cDespicable Me 2\u201d claim the top spot at the weekend box office with $82.5 million, but it also snagged a total of $142.1 million during its Tuesday to Sunday run. \u201cThe Lone Ranger,\u201d on the other hand, tanked to say the least. While it did score just under $50 million for its full holiday run, a $29.4 million opening weekend is nothing to boast about, especially when the film ran a whopping $215 million production tab. With no new comedy competition to fend off, as expected, \u201cThe Heat\u201d held strong. It only dropped 36.1% from weekend one to two, which let it take another $25 million to the bank. However, \u201cMonsters University\u201d did have direct competition to go up against, and it certainly suffered from the minion craze. After holding on rather strong from weekend one to two, that minimal 44.7% decline got bumped up to 57%, which only left it $19.6 million for its third weekend out. In fact, it fell so far that it almost lost the 4th position to \u201cWorld War Z.\u201d After a rather hefty 55.2% weekend one to two hit, that percent change came all the way down to 38.9%, which let it take another $18.2 million to the bank.
